This is an extremely short book. There's probably more content on the author's biography than on actual meditation.

But it captures the simple essence of Zen meditation that most meditation books greatly exaggerate -- probably to fill pages to allay the reader's dismay that there's nothing more to learn.

Zen meditation is simple. That's the difficulty of it. Practice is the core of Zen, not words written about it to enchant the mind.

Good read for the few minutes it lasts. That's Zen too. Things come and go, sometimes very quickly.

I don't know Howard Fast's work and I came to this book by accident, looking for free Kindle stuff. It was a good surprise.

I have been meditating for years, Zazen in the Soto School tradition. I don't necessarily practice meditation in the same way as mentioned here (i.e. I don't count breaths, or check my bodily signs, etc) yet I found this book very helpful to help me move from the obstacles I am facing at the moment. Fast's approach is relaxed and common-sensical. I think this book would be very helpful to anyone starting with Zazen or stuck in some aspect of his/her practice.

I highly recommend it.

I haven't read any Howard Fast novel so I only know him as someone practicing Zen. He makes it simple, although admittedly difficult. I was right there meditating with him as I read his work. This makes me want to meditate, too, because I don't have to, and because it seems like one of the most beautiful things in the world to do.

I appreciated this. It's more of a pamphlet in length than a book -- I think the author notes are longer than the original text. But it's a detailed and clear example of an approach to zen meditation, with suggestions for further reading.

Very easy to understand guide on meditation. I thought it had a lot of classic advice mixed with new ideas on how to relax your mind and body.

This really is a jewel in the annals of Zen literature.I downloaded it free from Amazon and thus had no high expectation. I was completely wrong and soon realized that I was in the hands of an experienced meditator and Zen practitioner.

Although a large portion (nearly half) of the book is given over to Fast's life story, for me, this does not diminish the book one bit. In fact, his story is a fascinating one and well worth the inclusion.

For all who are interested in meditation (Zen or otherwise), self development and the pursuit of a contented mind, you will find this book a great source of knowledge.

As the title says ... for me probably too short but otherwise I liked it. The editors filled in the book by the biography of the author which is kind of interesting but not really related to the topic of the book. And the actual text is really short ;-)

The book gives a person insight in the Eastern way of meditating and is very informative

I have read it twice and would recommend it to people who are interested in the Eastern Religions

A short and sweet advertisement about Zen meditation by an accomplished writer. No deep insights but an easy and enjoyable read.
