“An essential guide to the art and architecture of ancient Central America.” —Colonial Latin American Historical Review

Mary Ellen Miller evocatively surveys the artistic achievements of the high pre-Columbian civilizations—Olmec, Maya, Teotihuacan, Toltec, Aztec—as well as those of their less-well-known contemporaries. Their pyramids and palaces, jades and brightly colored paintings emerge from these pages as vividly as when they first astonished Cortes’s men in 1519. The fifth edition of this standard work incorporates new color images and extensive updates based on the latest research and discoveries. The revisions include a rewritten and extended chapter on Teotihuacan; up-todate analysis of the links between the Olmecs and the Maya; a discussion of new discoveries at the heart of the Aztec capital that continue to astound students of Mexico; and much more. 250 illustrations, 185 in color

3.0 out of 5 stars At times misleading: read sceptically April 19, 2014
I was assigned an older edition of this text a decade ago in an intro course. I picked up this copy to see the updates that have been made. As someone who works on ancient American art, I am a little worried that uninitiated readers are getting Miller's opinion presented as fact. While she presents a thorough overview of the major civilizations, she doesn't spend enough time discussing the controversy surrounding major debates in the field. Instead, she hands down her ruling on these debates, while completely omitting the opinions of those who disagree with her. While there isn't a comparable introductory text book for Mesoamerican art specifically, I'd probably assign an alternate text instead, especially for introductory readers. Consider David Carrasco's "Mesoamerican Religions".

I got this for an art history class. It is a great intro to the art of Mesoamerica with glossy full color photos. The size is convenient for throwing in a book bag to take to class.
