5.0 out of 5 stars Great choice of book for oil painting beginners July 3, 2013
I've had this book for nearly 10 years and continue to recommend it to those people just getting started with oil painting. There are so many wonderful options for books on oil painting which offer a wealth of information on practically every aspect of this artistic form. However, few of them offer such a step-by-step process as does this book, The Art of Oil Painting.

Don't get me wrong...this isn't anywhere close to a paint-by-numbers reference guide. It does, however, offer an overview of the painting process used by ten different successful artists. For each artist section, there is at least one example of one of their finished paintings. That same painting is then depicted at 4-6 various stages of completion along with suggestions on techniques used to reach that particular stage. This even goes so far as to include the oil colors that are used and mixed for the various areas on the painting. What you'll notice as you continue through the book is that all ten artists employ very different styles in their painting. But that is where it's helpful for the beginner. If you haven't yet formed your OWN style, it gives you a flavor and the opportunity to play around with different methods in order to find your own.

There is also an overview of oil painting at the beginning which covers color theory, drawing/painting techniques, and the necessary tools and materials. There's also a fair amount of detail about techniques for knife painting.

While I think this book would be of great interest to artists who are in the early stages of learning, it probably offers little unknown information to those who are at a more advanced level in our art.

I followed every page. Did what i was told. I am so good at painting a still life it scares me to have such confidence. It can happen. Buy it, follow it and then give yourself a big fat pat on the back.
