BENEFITS

RECOMMENDED

Experience The 4 Elements Of The Perfect Shave

1 Prepare

Pre-Shave Oil protects your skin and softens your beard before each shave. Always shave after or during a hot shower.

2 Lather-up

A warm, rich lather softens and lifts your beard from your face. We recommend a shaving brush with a glycerin-based shaving cream for a close and comfortable shave.

3 Shave

A razor with the proper weight, balance, and comfort is everything. It should glide across your face without too much pressure. Always shave with the grain first.

4 Moisturize

After shaving, apply a moisturizer to sooth, refresh, and regenerate your skin. Avoid after shaves which contain alcohol; these can irritate, dry out the skin and cause ingrown hairs.

EDIT: I am editing my review. I will even leave up my initial review below so you can see how I USED to feel about this product. But I have just gotten my second bottle of this product, used it one morning and I am returning it. The new "version" of this lotion is no longer creamy smooth like it used to be. Also the fragrance of my first bottle that I loved was a nice mellow, earthy sandalwood. However this new bottle is a horrible perfumy over the top sandalwood fragrance. Even my wife was avoiding me the morning after I used this new bottle because it was so bad. So something major has changed with the product, and I will never use it again.

----------- OLD REVIEW ----------
This product is amazing as an after shave lotion. I used to use the after shave "lotion" which is more or less cologne that is full of alcohol, and I dreaded that part of my shave because of the burning and irritation that followed. I tried all kinds of "sensitive skin" products, but they all did nothing but irritate me. Then one day I was treated to a professional shave at a upscale barber for my birthday. I told the barber how sensitive my skin was, and he said, "don't worry, I got you covered." After the shave he put this AoS Sandalwood Lotion on my face, and I was amazed at how great my face felt afterwards. I left that day with my first bottle of this product, and I have not shaved without it since then.

I do work from home ... so I don't shave but once or twice a week :) But this one bottle has lasted me almost 1.5 years. After each shave I squirt the bottle into my hand four times, in four little dots of lotion. One for each cheek, and two for my neck (one under each cheek). That small amount is all I need to fully cover my face and soothe any razor burns. It might seem a little on the expensive side for one bottle, but a little goes a long way and has lasted me 1.5 years.

This product was reformulated sometime in the last six months. The scent now bears no resemblance to the old sandalwood scent. It smells like sweet baby powder. The consistency is noticeably thinner, and it is now a brown color. TAOS used to be one of the best, warmest sandalwood scents around, and now, this product should not even have the word sandalwood among its descriptors or ingredients.

This give an excellent finish to a shave. I strongly suggest using the shaving oil as well. Apply hot water to dilate your pores, then apply the oil, then shaving cream, shave, and finally the after shave balm. The oil and balm make for an amazing shaving experience. Your face feels incredibly smooth afterward. I don't use it every day because it is a little more time consuming that just applying the shaving cream alone, but I do use the products above most of the time because of the great feel after.

I ordered the lavender balm along with the AOS lavender shaving cream (which i like) and was disappointed in the moisturizing capabilities of the balm.
Although the smell is fantastic it didn't calm my sensitive skin at all. I have switched back to my old, cheaper standby (Gillette for sensitive skin).

Edit- I now use this balm after first applying another product first to calm my skin. I then apply AOS lavender balm
and have found that it works well as a sealing layer that has the added benefit of smelling terrific, so I feel fine now about having bought this product.

I have used countless different facial moisturizers and aftershave balms. This is easily the worst. While it has a good scent, it does not fully absorb into your skin. It will leave an oily film on your skin making it look and feel greasy. Just terrible given the price point. If you are in the market for a good post-shave moisturizer, for high end product both Anthony for Men and Jack Black make great products. I even like Olay's Regenerist. If you only want to spend $5, use Every Man Jack's post-shave moisturizer. I cannot stress enough how bad this product is. It is a HUGE step down from the quality of the shaving cream. Nobody wants a greasy/oily face, especially when the product is $30-$40.

Scent Name: Sandalwood
Art of Shaving used to produce white creamy sandalwood aftershave that made your neck cool and your women tingle. Now they sell colored runny gunk that is way to expensive for a non-luxury item. Most of the reviews you see here are for the older product line. By not renaming the product, the company is basically doing a bait-switch and running on old reputation.

I was introduced to the products by the Art of Shaving store in the Venetian Casino. It was a great experience. These products are no longer worthy of having their own store there, just a place on the shelf at Walgreens next to Old Spice.

Here's to hoping the company changes course...

Edit: I found 4 old bottles of the white/good version on ebay, yay.

This stuff smells great and feels wonderful on the skin. I have much more expensive skin cream that I'm not using anymore because I like this much better. Very subtle scent so you don't have to worry about overwhelming people.

Very aptly named, it truly is the art of shaving

I bought the sandalwood variety. It smells terrific and leaves your skin feeling great. I hate to shave and would keep a beard if it wasn't so much trouble to maintain. I have sensitive skin and shaving is a nightmare because I'm left with painful spots that hurt all day (new blades or old). Most after shaves and balms result in skin irritations if not pimples. With this balm my skin feels unbelievably good, no ailments yet. The other day I wanted to shave a second time just to be able to apply the balm :) Two thumbs up and a chin.
