Having read previous reviews on this book and having dabbled with creativity on and off most of my life, finally, I decided to take the plunge and see if this book could change my life.
WELL? DOES IT WORK, DOES IT CHANGE YOUR LIFE?
Has it? Well Yes and no.
I'm not putting out massive works of art or prose, nor am I comfortable with even the pencil sketches I do. However, I am doing them again. I've had fits and starts of drawing, but this book does help you put that into perspective. You are a beginner and it is okay for your work to look like a beginners. Simple concept. Hard to internalize.
INTERESTING OUTCOME.
What I did find and others who use this program can probably confirm is that it helps get situations out in the open. Family stuff. When you do the morning pages, you ramble. You put down all that trash you are thinking and then you find you work to clean it up. You know all the stuff your kids, your spouse, your co-workers do, that really tick you off. You find you start to address that. Kind of a neat by-product.
MORNING PAGES ARE NOT SO BAD:
My first take on this, is dedicate a half an hour of my precious and sparse sleeping time.....? What are you nuts? Then I tried it. You have a clarity (and a drowsiness) in the AM, that is unmatchable any other time. Also, if you are like me get a whole lot less interruptions. I did the morning pages from 5:15 till 6:00 AM weekdays and after I got up on weekends. Weekends, sometimes I didn't get to them until afternoon. But, each day (except for 1 day in 12 weeks) they were religiously done.
Guess what? I'm hooked. I'm continuing and you might too. Consider this as a book (a life), you are writing, you are directing. What a concept!

I found this book is great for helping you to unclog a fettered mind. Its tools help you unlock the things holding you back and to re-connect with your creative self. I haven't done all the exercises in the book, but took it as a class locally. We went through one chapter a week and did various exercises from each chapter. Not everyone in the group was a writer (some were painters or other artists). The woman running class was herself a painter. She used the book to clear the cobwebs from her mind.

The main principles of the book are: (1) Write every day to clear the clutter from your mind, and (2) Take a weekly Artist's Date with just you to celebrate your creative genius. But the book is more than just these tools. There are many exercises throughout the book that warrant doing. I skipped many the first time through and intend to go back through the book again and re-read it, then doing other exercises. It has earned a place of honor on my shelf as both an inspirational text and a reference text. Like my thesaurus, this book is worn and kept at my writing desk always. If you have the opportunity to take it as a class or series of workshops, I highly recommend that. Doing it in a group setting opens up even more channels for artistic energy.

I first read this book several years ago and am still using the lessons I learned. It is a book of self-discovery. If you have no problems with producing the kind of art you'd like to create, this book may not be for you. But if you have lingering doubts about your creative ability or the value of creativity in general, this book will help you on your way. The benefits will vary based on the reader.
What stuck with me most was the sense of self acceptance I gained from going through the process outlined in The Artist's Way and the realization that only I can tell my story (I'm an author, not a painter). I share the same lessons with my students who occasionally suffer from writer's block.
Finally, the processes of doing Morning Pages has been indispensable in lubricating the track from my imagination to the computer keyboard. I type my pages instead of writing longhand as directed. The tactile feel of the keyboard is every bit as valuable to me as pen and paper is to some people. The discipline of the Morning Pages is worth reading this book for if nothing else.

I found a review a little farther down the page entitled "Read this book ... with caution" and I wanted to note it in my own because I want to say some similar things.

This book is okay. A few years ago I found it and read through it religiously, following most if not all exercises as advised. And a few of them were indeed helpful or insightful to me.

But I have a larger caution pertaining to this book. Its very premise sits on an idea that is closely related to both New Age and Christian thought and philosophy - she opens by advocating that a belief in some kind of outside force, whatever you call it (God, universe, flow, etc.), is necessary for her approach to creativity. That's the founding principle. Which is also saying that creativity, by its very nature, must come from a source outside oneself and/or from being connected to that source. And she follows this premise by giving a list of maxims to live by, put up, memorize, etc.

This premise explains some of the other findings in the book which the other review (noted above) has mentioned. And my own caution comes from my concern that regardless of whether there is or is not an outside source / whether a person believes in one, this book could teach people not to take responsibility for their own creativity and creation, nor their own ideas and intelligence. In essence the book may tend to develop in its reader a sort of dependence on its own teachings in order to stay connected with one's creative essence.

I myself would advise to learn what you can from the book by all means if you choose to read it, but I wouldn't recommend using it (or any other single book) as your creativity bible. Learn things, all things, that apply to yourself and interest you. But remember that every individual's vision and situation is beautifully unique, and that there is no blanket "answer" or "truth" - and create your own path to creativity.

Hope this is helpful!
