Book Description

October 23, 2012
The Arts of Contemplative Care collects the voices of pioneers in the emerging domain of vocational Buddhism. This anthology captures the richness and diversity of practices being developed by socially engaged Buddhists in the fields of chaplaincy and ministry. This volume outlines a robust intellectual and spiritual foundation for the discipline and establishes the methods for practicing contemplative care on college campuses, in hospitals, prisons and the military, and in hospice environments. The Arts of Contemplative Care, the first comprehensive overview of Buddhist chaplaincy of its kind, is sure to become a touchstone work for engaged Buddhists as they forge their place in the world of pastoral care.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"At a time when so many of us are facing the myriad challenges which come with caring for our elderly, sick and imprisoned kin, this wise, compassionate and practical guide comes along to aid us and to give us courage. This collection is a great contribution to all caregivers." —Jan Willis, author of Dreaming Me: Black, Baptist and Buddhist: One Woman’s Spiritual Journey

“This inspiring collection marks the coming-of-age of Buddhist chaplaincy in the United States. The Arts of Contemplative Care will be the principal handbook for such ministries in the years to come.” —Christopher Queen, Harvard University, editor of Engaged Buddhism in the West

“Historically, Buddhism takes root in new cultures when it begins to meet their deepest human needs in fresh and profoundly effective ways. This volume demonstrates how Buddhist chaplaincy and contemplative care now play a crucial role in the mutual transformation of Buddhism and the West, and how we can participate in the deep healing that they bring to those who suffer.” —John Makransky, Professor of Buddhism and Comparative Theology at Boston College, and author of Awakening Through Love

"This book is destined to become the core text of Buddhist Chaplaincy. A radical and wise offering to the world." — Noah Levine, author of Dharma Punx

“A valuable, honest and wise handbook—and a beautiful sign of the blossoming of Dharma in the West.” —Jack Kornfield, author of A Path With Heart

“A must-read for caregivers and others seeking to actualize genuine compassion beyond hope and fear—a treasure trove of practical wisdom.” —Fleet Maull, founder of the Prison Dharma Network, the National Prison Hospice Association, and the Center for Contemplative End of Life Care Programs at Naropa University

“My heartfelt wish is that the chaplaincy movement represented in this volume will grow and reach people like us who are in need. Just as our hearts can open wide enough to hold all the suffering in the world, so too, may Buddhist chaplaincy blossom.”—Toni Bernhard, author of How to Be Sick: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide for the Chronically Ill and Their Caregivers

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource and learning tool! March 16, 2013
Format:Hardcover
As a Buddhist hospital and university chaplain, I found this book incredibly helpful and affirming. From within the field, I find resonance with my own work-- allies in an emerging field. I also trust that for chaplains of other faiths, or anyone interested in spiritual care giving, this work will prove a valuable collection of wise reflections on compassionate action. In each chapter I found skillful weaving of personal insights grounded in compelling vignettes. With gratitude and inspiration, Harrison Blum M.Div., M.Ed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dispatches from the front lines . . . October 10, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Buddhist teaching emphasizes the wonderful concept of the bodhisattva -- the person who, as their own enlightenment develops, wades into the thick of human suffering to share the possibility of liberated happiness. This book is full of accounts by people who are doing exactly that. Sure, sitting serenely in a lovely meditation center in the suburbs or in a silent retreat site in the countryside has its place. But there's something bracingly real about bringing your dharma practice into a maximum security prison or to the bedsides of dying cancer patients. These are dispatches from the front lines, by people whose boots are on the ground.

I loved this book! As a newly trained hospice volunteer, I found it incredibly interesting and helpful -- inspiring and practical at the same time. I have recommended it warmly to my fellow volunteers and know we will all re-read it time and again as our experiences deepen.
