I was surfing Hulu for something interesting to watch one morning and came across a couple of episodes of BUNHEADS, a new series on ABCFamily (which of course is NOT available on our local cable channel.) Anyway--I was quickly hooked. The premise is that slightly aging (as in 30's rather than 20's) dancer MICHELLE (played by Foster) is tired of her sellout life as a Vegas dancer, but when she is summarily rejected sight seen by the director of a traveling production of Chicago, she marries her stagedoor Johnny suitor in a drunken moment of self-pity and wakes up to find herself on the way to her new home in the small Coastal town of Paradise, California. Once there she discovers that HUBBLE (her new husband) shares his house with his mother--an aging ex-dancer/artist who now runs a dance studio (primarily ballet--hence the name BUNHEADS) for the local children. There is comedy. There is tragedy. The dialogue is smart and snappy like a Broadway musical, and if you aren't paying attention you're going to miss some great lines. The actors, young and old, throw them away as if they know that there are plenty more where that came from. And there are.

While the series is obviously a vehicle for the talents of Broadway star, 2 Tony Awards winner actress/dancer Sutton Foster, the entire cast is excellent. I don't routinely learn the names of the actors playing in shows that I watch unless I'm beat over the head with them--just not good with names. Foster I recognized because we saw her in one of the final performances of her Broadway run of Anything Goes--and she was packing the house every night. She has a distinctive voice (jury's out on how I feel about it) and great physical comedy reminiscent of Mary Tyler Moore. She's pretty in a warm, approachable way and she's FUNNY--good comic timing.

It's basically Gilmore Girls reincarnated. And that, I'm definitely ok with.
Love this show, the humor, the cast, the set...love it all.

This is an entertaining series with hardly any objectionable material in it. I'm a high school teacher, and the teenagers' behavior is usually more believable than that of some of the adults in the show, so I find the characterization very true to life. Dialogue is well-written for the most part. There is one character (Truly) whom I find most irritating, however---not funny or entertaining in the least.

I highly recomend this show. The cast has a great chemistry. The writing is very good and I can see drama classes performing scenes from it for years and years to come. The dancing is wonderful, and I love the story lines that intermingle with each other- from Fanny the strict ballet teacher to Michelle, to the young dancers, to their own family's struggles and disapointments- there is something for everyone. The viewer becomes really invested in the characters as they are believable and relatable.

I was watching "Switched at Birth" which I love, and at the end, a clip of the show to be on next called "Bunheads" was shown. I had never heard of it, but it looked cute, I decided to download the pilot from amazon. I'm addicted! I'm already on the 5th episode.
It's funny and endearing. I love the characters and thier story lines. Try this show...you won't regret it.
