Thank god above for the V CAST song ID application on my phone. A few weeks ago my wife and I were doing some shopping at an outlet mall near us and I heard this pretty cool R&B song playing in this crowded and rather noisy clothing store, but thankfully my phone heard enough of the track to tell me that it was V.V. Brown's `Shark in the Water'. Trying to find her album in stores became a little difficult, but then I saw this nicely priced EP here and decided to download it and give it a whirl.

With influences ranging from Reggae to Gospel to the Blues, from Motown to R&B and Rock with throwbacks to George Michael and The Surfaris; this may be the most well rounded set of FOUR songs I've ever had the pleasure of diving into.

I want to start with `Shark in the Water', even though it is the last track here. This is the acoustic version, and I am so grateful for that (I love the sound of a beautiful and interesting voice lacing the harsh yet supple strings of an acoustic instrument). The sharp R&B flare is beautifully captured here, yet the acoustic melody elevates it, adding layers of soft rock and even folk influence. V.V.'s voice is beautifully embellished here, with a rawness that is so comforting and inviting.

What is so cool about this EP is that no two songs sound the same, or even similar.

`Game Over' opens the EP with a bang, splicing true Hip-Hop and R&B overtones together to create a sublime club worthy hit that teeters on the cuffs of anthem worthy greatness. Just listening to this empowering and enthusiastic track will get your fists in the air and your feet stomping in unison. The chorus alone is so infectious you'll be singing this day after day after day. `Quick Fix' is completely different, giving a great 60's rock/Motown vibe with a style that calls to mind modern artists like The Strokes or The White Stripes. It is such a fun and energetic song that shows yet another side to this wonderful talent.

The Andrew Weatherall Mix of `Crying Blood' instantly plays off the recognizable riff from `Wipeout' to create a marvelously textured track that give us Hip-Hop, Industrial and Pop with so much gusto and fervor you can't help but instantly fall in love.

Also, you have to love the visual left from her lyrical paintbrushes!

I am definitely going to seek out any and everything I can find from this girl, and I only hope that this EP was not a fluke. If this is any indication of all that she has to offer, then she may very well be one of the most diverse and (get this) talented singers (sorry, I mean ARTISTS) making their mark in the music world today!
