Editorial Reviews

If the planet is threatened by super villains, time traveling conquerors, alien invaders, mythical beasts, or robots bent on the total destruction of humanity, if the forces of evil are so overwhelming that no single hero has the power to save the world, when there is no hope left, you assemble the AVENGERS. The Avengers are the best of the best in the Marvel universe, the greatest heroes who take on the unbeatable foes. These are the heroes who hold back the storm. On their shoulders rests the fate of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Avengers Assemble March 2, 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Marvel has always impressed me with its comics, animated shows, movies and more. Marvel animated cartoons have been going on since the 1960s with its 60s Spider-Man.

Many cartoons today are pretty awful. I have been closely to losing faith as cartoons today have been pretty much gone downhill. But on that day when I went to the San Diego Comic-Con and paid a visit to the Marvel booth, I saw something intriguing, a poster advertising Marvel's latest action show: Avengers:Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Avengers:Earth's Mightiest Heroes is the latest animated series produced by Marvel. Avengers:EMH debuted on Disney XD October 20. It is far better then the god-awful Avengers cartoon from 1999 which did not get a good press. What is very odd is that when people first heard of Avengers:EMH, everone said,"oh no, this was gonna be "too kiddy" and not for the teens and/or adults because its on Disney XD. Those who said that were terribly mistaken. Avengers:EMH is far from "kiddy". In fact, it is very similar to the Batman TAS and the 90s X-Men animated series. It has recieved positive reviews from fans and good ratings. Some say it is even the 90s X-Men of this generation.

Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes follows the adventures of Marvel's greatest heroes, Iron man, Ant-Man, Wasp, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Panther and Hawkeye as they battle the most diabolical villains. The episodes are very loyal to the comics as the Avengers start off as solos but unite in the first episode and new members are added as they progress.

The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes!" stars the well-known voice talents of Rick D. Wasserman ("Planet Hulk," "Marvel Vs. Capcom 3," "House M.D.") as Thor, Brian Bloom ("The A Team," "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2") as Captain America, Fred Tatasciore ("Tron: Evolution," "Hulk Vs.," "Wolverine and the X-Men") as The Hulk, Wally Wingert ("The Family Guy," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno") as Ant Man, and Phil Lamarr ("Mad TV," "Futurama") as Jarvis.

If you want action, adventure and/or just simply adore Marvel, then don't miss Avengers:Earth's Mightiest Heroes. This will be a must-have for Marvel fans of all ages.

Here episodes in volume 2.

1.Some Assembly Required-The Avengers are now united and Iron Man shows them their new home, Avengers Mansion. As the Avengers discuss their plans to catch all the escaped super-villains, Enchantress places a spell on Hulk and sends him on a rampage.

2.Living Legend-While searching for the Hulk in the Northern Hemisphere, the Avengers stumble upon Captain America who has been frozen in the ice since WWII. After thawing him out, Captain America find himself in a changed modern world. As he adapts with his new friends, Baron Zemo and Arnim Zola unleash a terrible monster on New York.

3.Everything is Wonderful-A business decision by Tony Stark leads rival Simon Williams to go to extreme measures for revenge- he seeks help from the Grim Reaper and AIM. Now transformed into the ionic powered Wonder Man, Simon takes the fight back to Tony Stark! But the only one there to defend Tony is the one Avenger who dislikes him the most- Ant-Man. Has Tony Stark changed? Plus, it's Wasp and Thor versus MODOK.

4.Panther's Quest-After stalking the Avengers for days, the prince of Wakanda, alias the Black Panther turns to the Avengers for help to take back his throne from the nasty Man-Ape. To make matters worse, HYDRA and Klaw are after the vibranuim.

5.Gamma World part 1-The Avengers are sent to the Cube, a dangerous prison for gamma-exposed prisons. A dome of gamma energy envelops the Cube, turning everyone inside of it into a fearsome gamma monster. S.H.I.E.L.D. and Doc Samson know that the Leader and a host of super villains are inside...but worse, the dome is expanding. The Avengers are going in, but they're not prepared for what they find inside. Meanwhile, Hawkeye catches up to the traitorous Black Widow.

6.Gamma-World part 2-Things go from bad to worse as the nasty Leader unleashes gamma energy and turns half of North America into ferocious gamma monsters, including the Avengers. In 24 hours, the entire world will be under the Leader's control. Our only hope? Hawkeye. His only hope? Finding the Incredible Hulk and convincing him to stop the Leader from turning Earth into Gamma World.

Without wishing to raise the specter of ancient Marvel/DC rivalries, it's impossible not to compare this series with Justice League, and with Justice League's successor series, Justice League Unlimited. For although The Avengers doesn't quite have the philosophical depth of Justice League Unlimited, like the Justice League shows it is nevertheless proof positive that a superhero cartoon can be done entirely seriously and - astonishing as this might be for some people - still wind up as an intelligent piece of television. Far more so in fact than most live action "grown up" shows that get made.

There is so much to say here, but of course, I don't want to give away any spoilers. One thing I will say is that I particularly love the languid pace at which the broader, season-spanning plot arcs are slowly, almost casually moved into place, even as the audience is blitzkrieged with the superheroic action sequences of the moment. For like Justice League Unlimited, this show is as much a serial as it is a series.

So keep your eyes open as you go along!

But for me, the best thing about The Avengers is the truly seamless melding of silver and iron age aesthetics. Old-school fans will delight in all the countless references to the original Avengers comic books from the 1960s. This applies on virtually every conceivable level, from costume design to inter-character conflicts. At the same time, we also see at least the beginnings of a far harder-edged iron age cynicism, and even political consciousness - particularly in the characters of Tony Stark, and, arguably, Henry Pym. Neither of these elements were ever even remotely present in the original comics. Contemporary comic book fans will likewise note the merging of elements from both the original and "Ultimate" Marvel Universes. Yet here again, these disparate elements are so perfectly combined that it is difficult to imagine them ever being apart.

At the time of writing, this disc is not yet available for purchase, and the product info does not state which, or how many episodes are included. As you may have noticed, I've reviewed the show, not this specific release. However, the length is listed as 135 minutes, which would translate to 6 episodes of roughly 22 minutes each. Given that (by a similar process of inference) volume 1 appeared to contain the first 7 episodes, it seems that what we have here are episodes 8 to 13. It does kinda suck when companies milk their new releases like this: I think it's obvious that most consumers would far prefer it were the show to be released in whole seasons, or at least half seasons.

While we're on the topic of this release, it's also worth adding that on a purely visual level, the DVD cover art we see in the product snapshot here on Amazon doesn't really do this show justice. The art in The Avengers actually has a very slightly "gritty" feel to it that I haven't seen in an animated television show before; at least, not outside of some of the older MTV stuff from the 1990s.

Finally, returning to the show itself, there is a lot here to tickle the interest of the more knowledgeable animation and sci-fi fans. For example, Jeffrey Combs, who so superbly provided the voice for The Question in Justice League Unlimited, here voices the classic Hulk supervillain The Leader. Combs will also be familiar to many from his various roles in multiple Star Trek series (always in heavy alien makeup). For the movie buffs, Iron Man is voiced with a downright Robert Downey Jr. quality; albeit not by Mr. Downey himself.

Ah well. We can but dream!

Theo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even Better May 29, 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Finally a well made Classic Avengers. Even though it is the modernized origins (Except for Cap) they are still quite true to what I grew up with in the 70's/80's. Great stories, lots of action, and the animation is a far cry better than a lot of the marvel toons from the 90's. If you like the Avengers I highly recommend.
