Editorial Reviews

If you don t listen carefully, you might miss him. With a flow that strings detached alliteration, off kilter-metaphors and why-hasn t-he-taken-a-breath-yet delivery, Cloudy October is not always the easiest guy to grok. So the first lyrics he delivers from Inlaw (Alternate Take) are pretty intuitive: Reach until the speech impedes. But if you put on your thinking cap and keep your ears open, the emcee s cunning is brought to life as he bends words and pronunciations to describe his dreams ( I awaken with my eyes still shut, just to get a rush and a million bucks ) and his lyrics ( thoughtful, awful, frigid, sentimental, pen or pencil ) from of his impressive new EP, The Aviator Is Dead. Inlaws (Alternate Take) could be a B-side for The Mouse and the Mask sans Aqua Teen Hunger Force with muffled piano flourishes, crackling harp samples and stop/start beat constructions. In the end, you may not always know where Cloudy October is taking you, but that s half the fun of listening to his music. --Local Cut: Zach Klassen

In I Care About Sex , the melody in the intro sets the song off to a great start, but you only hear that same melody two more times amidst the rest of the transforming beat. Cloudy sounds super dope over those parts which is why I would have liked to hear more, but the beat changes too much for my liking. Hard to find a cohesive vibe for that track, but the 3 instances of that melody are enough to hold you down until his next release. Conclusion: This CD might not be for everyone. I personally have a different preference for production (beatwise) but am a huge fan of spoken word. The spoken word influence and well planned concepts of this release alone make the CD worth your time, and a must have for your collection. --Phat Root Radio: 5th Sequence
