Editorial Reviews

Review

“. . . extraordinarily colorful . . .” (Book News, Inc., August 2011)

The Ayahuasca Visions of Pablo Amaringo is a big, beautiful book, filled with gorgeous reproductions of the visionary art of curandero (Ayahuasca healer) and artist Pablo Amaringo. . . For those who have never experienced Ayahuasca, this book provides a deep and powerful look into its visionary realm. For those who have, it offers an expansion and validation of the truth of their own journeys.” (Robert Simmons, MetaGuide Magazines, September 2011)

“. . . the magic of this book for me was the large beautifully printed full page paintings, which take up the main part of the book, each accompanied by Pablo’s own commentary, guiding us around the symbolism and the story of each image. Reading these commentaries is a rich fest of folklore and sacred learning and I was transported into the whole sensory presence of the rainforest seeing it, hearing it, smelling it, through this remarkable man’s experiences and his vibrant paintings!” (Faith Nolton, Sacred Hoop Magazine, September 2011)

“Many of the stories behind the visionary art hit deep feelings of truth that could never be put into words without the art to guide you. Living in a three dimensional world creates a bias that’s difficult to escape without the help of hallucinogenics, and to sit and read and look at the many beautiful pieces of art brought me right back to those hidden dimensions that typically lie just beyond our everyday perception.” (Rahasya Poe, Lotus Guide, November 2012)

From the Inside Flap

SPIRITUALITY / ART

Recognized as one of the world’s great visionary artists, Pablo Amaringo was renowned for his intricate, colorful paintings inspired by his shamanic visions. A master communicator of the ayahuasca experience--where snakes, jaguars, subterranean beings, celestial palaces, aliens, and spacecraft all converge--Amaringo’s art presents a doorway to the transcendent worlds of ayahuasca intended for contemplation, meditation, and inspiration.

Illustrating the evolution of his intricate and colorful art, this book contains 48 full-color reproductions of Amaringo’s latest works with detailed explorations of the rich Amazonian mythology underlying each painting. Through their longstanding relationship with Amaringo, coauthors Charing and Cloudsley are able to share the personal stories behind his visions and experiences with Amazonian people and folklore, capturing Amaringo’s powerful ecological and spiritual message through his art and words. With contributions by Graham Hancock, Jeremy Narby, Robert Venosa, Dennis McKenna, Stephan Beyer, and Jan Kounen, this book brings the ayahuasca experience to life as we travel on Amaringo’s visionary brush and palette.

PABLO AMARINGO (1938-2009) trained as a curandero in the Amazon, healing himself and others from the age of ten, but retired in 1977 to become a full-time painter and art teacher at his Usko-Ayar school in Pucullpa, Peru. The author of Ayahuasca Visions: The Religious Iconography of a Peruvian Shaman, his art has been displayed throughout the world. HOWARD G. CHARING is a director of the Eagle’s Wing Centre for Contemporary Shamanism in London and the coauthor of Plant Spirit Shamanism. PETER CLOUDSLEY is a musicologist, writer, and the founder of the Amazon Retreat Centre in Peru.

I used this book as research for my own novel about a shaman in the Venezuelan rain forest. I could not have written it without this as Pablo Amaringo provided not only beautiful pictures of his visions, but explanations as to what they all meant, down to each being and setting. Recommended for anyone seriously interested in this subject.

This comprehensive book is so much more than a beautiful art book, which it most certainly is. The art is beautifully reproduced and accompanied by the most comprehensive information out there about the Mestizo Indigenous Cosmology and Images of the Upper Amazon. While I could go on, the better choice is to get this book and immerse yourself - it is well worth it. The bounty of the years that went in to the research and interviews provides enough material to keep me busy reading for a good long while and to make this a true reference guide.

In addition to the overall outstanding quality and detailed content of the book, the art pieces themselves are stunning, provocative, meditative, and capture the true teaching and spirit of the late great Don Pablo Amaringo. As a dear friend of his in life, I can truly say that he would be honored and immensely pleased at how this book turned out.

For anyone interested in Amazonian, Folk or Visionary Art, shamanism, ayahuasca, curanderismo, vegetalismo and Peruvian culture, this book is a must!

Through reading "Supernatural" - Graham Hancock & "Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss"- Dennis McKenna, I'm familiar with the name Pablo Amaringo.

But other than that, I knew very little about the man other than his odd, yet beautiful way of painting. This book does a great job of highlighting Pablo's life story and through his words, understanding each of his paintings.

I know a good deal about Ayahuasca, but I've never learned much about it through an indigenous voice. If you're interested by Ayahuasca or DMT, I suggest giving this book a try. Very easy to read...

Pablo started a whole field of ayahausca vision painting. The images in here are among the best. Though Pablo is gone and his school appears to have disbanded, a new style has established itself. The number of tourists going to Iquitos is proof that this shamanic culture has taken hold.
