Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for BABIES ON THE BUS:
“Lots of baby swagger.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Bright colors and simple patterns are eye-catching for all, but will have special appeal for babies and toddlers. Katz’s familiar round-faced youngsters of different ethnicities will delight readers.” —School Library Journal

Praise for COUNTING KISSES:
“With buoyant cartoons rendered in a bouquet of vibrant pastel tones, Katz . . . creates a book as irresistible as a baby’s smile.” —Publishers Weekly

Praise for OVER THE MOON:
“An ebullient tribute for families whose members may have come from a faraway place.” —Publishers Weekly

Praise for THE COLORS OF US:
“Katz’s pencil-and-gouache pictures joyously convey the range of human pigmentation. Positive and useful.” —School Library Journal

About the Author

Karen Katz has written and illustrated many books for children, including The Colors of Us, Can You Say Peace, My First Ramadan, Counting Kisses and Where is Baby’s Belly Button. Long inspired by folk art from around the world, she was inspired to write her first book, Over the Moon, when she and her husband adopted their daughter from Guatemala, and she wanted to tell the story of welcoming Lena into their lives. Katz loves to paint and experiment with texture, color, collage and pattern. Besides an author and illustrator, she has been a costume designer, quilt maker, fabric artist and graphic designer. Katz and her family divide their time between New York City and Saugerties, New York.

More About the Author

Check out my newest book WIGGLE YOUR TOES! A Book to pull, fluff, and wiggle!

I have always been interested in folk art from around the world, Indian miniatures, Mexican ceramics, fabrics, Chagall, Matisse, children's art, and primitive painting, and I love to paint and experiment with pattern, texture, collage and color. The careers I've had--as a costume designer, a quilt maker, a fabric artist, and a graphic designer--have taken all these interests into account. Looking back, I can see that these passions and career choices have played a large part in influencing me to become a children's book author and illustrator.

But most importantly, it was after my husband and I adopted our daughter from Guatemala that I was inspired to do a children's book for her. My first book, Over the Moon, was the story of that magical experience of welcoming our daughter Lena into our lives. I painted, I drew, I collaged, and I wrote, and after working very hard... a beautiful book was born! Twenty-two books later, my daughter--now fourteen years old--still is an inspiration for me.

I am fascinated by babies and little kids. The simplest words and gestures can make them laugh. Sometimes standing in line at the supermarket and watching kids in grocery carts, my best ideas are born.

I am fascinated by people from all over the world and what they look like and how they live and the differences that make us all unique.

When an idea pops into my head I ask these questions:
Will a child want to read this book?
Will a parent want to read this book with their child?
Will this book make a parent and child feel something?
Is there something visual here that will hold a child's interest?
Will a child see something in a different way after reading this book?
If the answer is yes, then I know I'm on the right track.

I am very lucky to get to do what I do. Everyday I go into my studio and have fun. Don't get me wrong, some days are very frustrating. Sometimes the colors are all wrong and the words don't sound right. But after I work at it for a while...and try to do it a different way...and think...and change the words or colors...and try some more...suddenly, there it is--a great page of writing, or a great illustration. And nothing is more satisfying than that.

It's hard to find anything not to like about The Babies on the Bus. If you are familiar with this illustrator, you will quickly recognize her trademark little round headed babies. Simply drawn but oh so expressive, they are certainly the highlight of this colorful book. Did I say colorful? I mean REALLY colorful. Young babies and toddlers will be dazzled by this feast for the eyes and will be delighted when mom and dad start singing the song. They will be sure to join in when the babies get to sing LA LA LA, but hopefully won't join in when they all cry WAAH WAAH WAHH! All the classic verses are there, as well as some that I think are new. The babies get to fall asleep this time as the bus goes ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM, and then they all get to say BYE-BYE BUS! A perfect choice to help introduce the song to your toddler. It's boundless energy make it a good choice for story time as well. Don't miss this bus!

This is my daughter's favorite book! Great take on the wheels on the bus. Just wish it came in a board book version. The book is starting to become more tape than paper!

A cute, colorful variation on the old favorite song, "The Wheels on the Bus." Interspersed with the original verses, the author adds several new ones. Bright, bold colors in a fun book for ages 1-5.

Not only do I love this book, so do my twin grand babies! All I have to do is start reading the book, they stop what they are doing and immediately crawl over to join me! Definitely a favorite!
I love the multicultural aspect of the babies. Something we need a great deal more of in children's books.
Whenever anyone at work has a new baby join their family, I give them this book.

I bought this board book version after reading it in the library with my toddler and falling in love with it! It's durable for a toddler and perfect size for her hands with no worries about ripping the pages. We love all the Karen Katz books and her trademark babies and colorful and fun illustrations. I've been teaching my daughter the original "Wheels on the Bus" song so this book was a perfect compliment to that and includes some of the original lyrics, such as "The Wheels on the Bus go round and round," "the doors on the bus go open and close," and "the wipers on the bus go swish swish swish," as well as unique lyrics like "the babies on the bus bounce bumpity bump" and "the babies on the bus sing la-la-la."

My favorite thing about this book is the interaction factor. As I sing each page to my daughter, I have her do hand motions for each page, such as opening and closing her hands for the doors, moving her hands side to side for the wipers, and bouncing her on my lap for when the babies bounce on the bus. It always makes her laugh as well as gets her involved with the story/song. It also teaches movement to a melody. We read this book every day and it never gets old! If your child loves "The Wheels on the Bus" he or she will love Karen Katz's version!
