Book Description

April 1, 2010 3 and up
Boom! Crash! Bang! A dragon has arrived! He is big, loud, snorting purple smoke—and all he wants is treasure. And he'll try anything to get it . . . but he wasn't expecting the Baby. The Baby isn't the slightest bit afraid of the dragon, no matter what tricks he tries, and it's only after their fun-filled, nighttime adventure that the dragon realizes what real treasure is.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1 A big dragon meets his match when he tries to frighten a playful baby in this not-so-scary picture book. The bad-tempered creature snorts silver sparks, puffs fire, and farts purple smoke as he attempts to intimidate the child into handing over his treasure. Baby responds by gurgling, burping, and pooping, which the flustered dragon discovers certainly isn't treasure. In fact, it is the baby who tames the dragon by crying until the monster plays with him and cradles him like a precious jewel. Cheerful watercolor pastels make the beast look friendly in spite of all his bluster. Stars, swirls, and humorous details in the pictures add to the fun. Preschoolers and children with younger siblings may enjoy this silly romp. Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CT

From Booklist

The familiar premise of a child coming to terms with something potentially scary receives a fresh twist here. A baby tames a dragon not by doing anything spectacular but by just doing regular baby stuff: babbling, burping, pooping, and crying. In return, the dragon finds itself taking care of the baby when it had intended to scare the baby into handing over his treasure. The perplexed dragon saying, “This certainly isn't treasure,” while changing the baby's diaper, will make young readers and listeners chuckle. Unfortunately, the audience isn't quite clear; kids old enough to follow the story line may not be interested in reading about a baby. Colorful watercolor illustrations of the not-too-scary dragon and the intrepid baby provide a variety of perspectives and show lots of action, which will help keep kids' attention. The soothing ending, in which they make friends and the dragon teaches the baby to fly, reassures. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Diane Foote
