Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The small town of Yorkshire Falls and its colorful inhabitants including a mysterious panty-raider and a fun-loving but devious mother are a sturdy stage for Phillips's (Erotic Invitation) romantic romp. After news of his mother's weak heart summons him home, globetrotting journalist Roman Chandler loses a coin toss with his brothers that determines who will relinquish his bachelor status to give their mother a grandchild. Roman decides to "settle down" without giving up his travel-intensive job, and as one of the most handsome men in town, he can have his pick of the local women except for Charlotte Bronson, his high school crush. Thoughts of her parents' miserable long-distance marriage keep Charlotte from accepting Roman's proposal, despite the sexual sparks that fly at their every encounter. Mutual attraction eventually proves too powerful to resist, however, but first Roman must win her trust. Though Phillips gives sensual friction and emotional introspection equal attention, the emotional chemistry between Roman and Charlotte merely simmers while the sexual chemistry explodes. The first in a Chandler brothers trilogy, this entry will encourage readers who enjoy dining on passion to pick up the next book, but those who prefer more emotionally bonded characters may chose a different course.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Liked It, August 6, 2002

I have learned over the many years that I have been reading that you shouldn't expect every book you read to become your favorite. Many reviewers have claimed that they were disappointed with this selection. They read it because Kelly Ripa suggested it. I, too, am one of those people that read THE BACHELOR because it was recommended by Kelly. I bought the book to enjoy the fluff. That is all that "Reading with Ripa" promised. The books on her list don't require companion books to explain the premise. The selections don't make great promises to lure the reader to make huge life decisions. This book is intended for a quick summer read that is light and fluffy and easy to read. THE BACHELOR comes through.

The story is fun and cute. Three brothers swearing off marriage and their mom who would do anything to get a grandbaby... It's funny and simple, the perfect beach book. Sit back, enjoy, and don't expect life-altering messages like Oprah, and you'll will love and anticipate the rest of the series!

3.0 out of 5 stars Simple Reading, August 23, 2002
By A Customer
I was looking forward to reading this "light-reading" book...and that it was. I wouldn't say that it is bad, but there were some things that were hard to take. The two main characters (Roman and Charlotte) had one date in high school, now years later they're still into each other and he thinks she's the one he is to marry. Give me a break. His mom leads him to believe she has a fatal heart condition (so that her sons will get married and give her a grandchild...again...give me a break), Roman, and his two brothers are like "okay, take it easy mom, let us know if you need anything". Also, the person who breaks into peoples homes to steal crocheted panties to keep the local business in business???? What was that all about? Who cares??? I found myself skipping whole paragraphs of these characters thoughts (I got sick of their whining) just to get through the book. But, I pressed on and in the end, kind of liked it for what it was... light reading and no major commitment into the characters (though I probably will read the next book in this trilogy...Playboy...just to see what happens to the next brother).

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good "In-Between" Book, July 11, 2002
I have to first admit that I only bought this book because it was recommended by Kelly Ripa. I was very eager to read along with her book club and could not wait to start this book. However, I was really disappointed. I realize The Bachelor was chosen because it is a easy and light read, but it was a little too light for me. The story was very predictable. I could pretty much figure out how it was going to end from the first few pages. I could have given this book an even lower rating, but it does have some redeeming qualities. The Bachelor is a great "beach book". Its simple to read, not alot of concentration involved. The sex scenes are very explicit, just what you need in a summer novel. I can't say that this book has alot of great literary content, but its a great "in-between" book. I sometimes like to read something easy as a break from heavier, more serious novels. As a whole, it was a nice break, but not something I can really recommend to serious readers.
