This handy guide gives detailed, organized facts and summaries for many of the common chicken breeds. Most entries have photos. The information here is perfect for helping the casual chicken owner make informed decisions as to selecting appropriate breeds for eggs, meat, show, or all three! Includes information on hardiness and temperament.

The Backyard Chickens Breed Guide, in only about 70 pages, provides a great deal of information and breed photographs to help readers pick the breed they most admire.

Before proceeding, though, I probably should state, even though the author and I share the same family name, we are not related and have never met one another.

In his discussion of the breeds, Mike Anderson leads each breed with a photograph (except for two, one of which has a line drawing and the other, sadly, Anderson has thus far been unable to obtain a picture of). He then posts a just-the-facts, information brief, followed by a detailed discussion of the breed.

I have raised several of the breeds discussed and agree 100 percent with his assessments. In fact, Anderson is one of the few writers I've agreed with regarding Brahma chickens being good layers, as well as a quiet, docile breed. Kudos to Anderson.

I should note that I originally purchased this book in a package deal of two booklets. The two books helped persuade me to buy some day-old chicks - two Australorp and two Barred Rock pullets so my wife and I can have our own farm-fresh eggs.

Any book that can so move me has got to be praised. The Backyard Breed Guide gets five stars.

This is a very good overview of chicken breeds. The information is perfect for a novice and gives you enough detail without getting to verbose.

It helped our family narrow down which breed of chickens we plan to buy for some cold hardy, somewhat friendly, hens that lay a generous amount of eggs. Further research will of course be needed, but if you're still just looking for overviews of breeds this is a good book to pick up.

This is an easy to read guide to the more common breeds of chickens a homeowner could want. The author seems thorough giving hints about what is typical for breeds and whether or not to avoid the types that may be too noisy for your neighbors. A great read for anyone considering raising chickens or just wanting to know more about what it take to raise chickens.
