This is an amazing story that traces the life - both the ups and downs of Lowell Hawthorne and The Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill.

It is an inspiring story of the life of Lowell Hawthorne from his childhood in Jamaica to being one of the more successful entrepreneurs in America. Lowell's story has plenty of ups and downs. There were lots of times when it would have probably made sense to scale back or settle. One of the more impressive things about Lowell and the rest of his family is their drive to succeed.

This story will be extremely interesting to people who migrate to America from the Caribbean or other less developed areas. His story should be an inspiration and guiding light to minority Americans who want more and are willing to work hard to achieve more.

There are lots of valuable lessons in Lowell's story. But you will need to dig them out. This is not a step by step manual. This is the story of how he and his family achieved remarkable success. The lessons are imbedded in the story.

If you were to give an MBA class a resume of the people involved in the start-up of Golden Krust and the resources and methods and asked the class to predict the outcome and give the reasons for success or failure, in my opinion no MBA student would have come close to predicting the outcome.

All the family members grew up working in a small bakery their family owned in Jamaica - so they had first hand experience in working in all areas of the bakery. But that was a relatively small operation in a country where regulations were few and competition was limited. I am not sure the experience from Jamaica gave them much advantage when applied to the new operation in New York.

The Bakers Son should be required reading for anyone interested in business. This book clearly delineates the rough road to success often overlooked when people hear about "overnight" success stories. Lowell and his family were confronted with countless hurdles but persevered and through core beliefs and a common vision for the future were able to achieve tremendous success which continues to grow to this day. For this incredible family this is only the beginning.

Lowell Hawthorne shares his roller coaster ride of life that led him to become the Founding CEO of Golden Krust Bakery, a multi-unit franchising restaurant chain and food/beverage distributor headquartered in New York City. He grew up in a large close-knit family and influenced many of them to join his pursuit of the American Dream. This book has many twists and turns that will surprise you and leave you astonished. Lowell's story is incredible.
