Already the impressive line-up of contributors should say it all, but this is much more than a mere collection of academic essays: an attractively designed compendium of Ballardiana, including scans of hitherto unpublished autograph letters, manuscripts and typescripts. There's even a travel feature on Ballard's Shanghai, where his letters and maps will help your navigation. The always relevant illustrations, many of them in color, from fan art to book covers to Ana Barrado's atmospheric infrareds, take full advantage of the A4 format (if you already have those Re/Search Ballard books, this "TJGBB" will fit snugly next to them). In short, a must for every Ballardian.

There are any number of Ballard studies on the market; I would rather have one or two that dissect some of the more complex visions on his palette…'The JG Ballard Book' instead is heavy on fawning memorabilia - i.e. several pages of reproductions of handwritten notes…ooh! ooh!...yet mundane notes pertaining to bibliographic info re: the table of contents in his complete short stories collection…yawn (If these notes were from early drafts of 'Crash' - or, hell, just about any Ballard novel - I'd have been more excited). Or a long travelogue to the 75-yr. old Hong Kong home and community of Ballard, which results in the mildly (and minor-ly) interesting discovery that said home is now a restaurant, and that this site can be seen on Google Earth…um, yeah. On the other hand, there's a seemingly fresh study of, essentially, the (numerous) failures and (few)graphic design successes in the packaging and marketing of Ballard's books.
