Most Helpful Customer Reviews

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful By Gail Cooke HALL OF FAMETOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on January 3, 2004
One does not have to be a dance aficionado to enjoy and appreciate the spectacular art work in this tribute to the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo (1938-1962). Some 42 color plates and 21 duotone illustrations fill a gallery of costume and set designs recording for all time the uniqueness of this company. Presented are the designs of fourteen artists for nineteen premieres.
Essentially, the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo became an American company with the beginning of World War II causing a separation from its home in Monte Carlo. As it traveled throughout the United States the Ballet found itself greeted by enthusiastic audiences, thus building a loyal following for this dance form in the United States.
Published in partnership with an exhibition at the Cincinnati Museum of Art, this volume represents the largest collection of designs commissioned by this company. Many of the ballets were born during America's wartime years, often reflecting the turbulent times in our country.
Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo is a must for followers of dance, and an enjoyment for all.
- Gail Cooke
