Book Description

To dream a life…
Or live a dream?

“This is the end of my life as I’ve known it. I can’t spend another day playing the sidekick in other people’s stories. I can’t keep trusting the advice or expectations of adults who lack the time and interest to see me for who I am and what I care about. I will not argue anymore about why my dreams are valid. Today, I step forward on my own path into the unknown without a backward thought. If I get crushed, so be it. At least I’ll know what it means to be the keeper of my own destiny.”

With these thoughts, 16 year-old Kyle Weaver breaks free from foster care and public education to set out on the path of his own greatness. What follows are the trials of a modern-day hero’s journey.

The Barefoot Warrior explores a universal human yearning for liberation and fulfillment that is shared by people young and old throughout the world. This book offers a fresh and youthful perspective on the social and educational problems that society faces today.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Barefoot Warrior May 3, 2012
By Steve
Format:Paperback
Reading the back cover, I was hopeful that this book could help reach troubled young people (and parents!)that I regularly counsel. After reading it through, I was sure of its remarkable potential. It captures the reader from the first paragraph and sets a pace that keeps one at Kyle's side each moment. Kyle is a very approachable teen with a unique background that young people can identify with, understand and role model. It reveals the "dead end" of the all-to-typical teen response and maps out a realistic course for growth in a troubled world. Author Scott Edmund Miller provides a number of remarkable insights that are very "hands-on" useful for young readers, parents, educators, counselors, psychologists and others dealing with the challenges facing young people today. Though it is fiction, it has many very clear messages about a very highly stressed portion of our population. I have also just read author Miller's non-fiction "User's Guide to Being Human". Now this book is an amazing revelation about how we can all expand the inate human capacities that rest unused inside each of us, adults and young alike! I am ordering the companion exercise books now. Thank you Scott Edmund Miller!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great opening - I want to know more! January 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Just started reading this book and already, I'm hooked! I want to know more about Kyle, the lead character, and I'm already wishing for good things for him. Teens get so many mixed messages and challenges in modern times - I can remember thinking I needed more of a voice in what happened in my life, just as the main character did. Drew me in from the first few paragraphs, and I'll be sharing this book with some teens I know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sarah June 19, 2012

Format:Paperback
After reading The Barefoot Warrior I was wondering how Kyle's life will look 10-20 years later? I'm hoping for a sequel to the first book.
Although I am a 50 year old wife and mother of twins, I was amazed at how much I identified with the character Kyle. Kyle was trying to figure out how to be his true authentic self in a world where unthinking adults and institutions discourage us from being different or having different ideas. And what will happen if one risks being their true authentic self when so many don't understand that need? I know what happens because I'm living it....Kyle's journey helps him to discover the same thing. Will you identify with Kyle? It will be interesting to find out how many of us feel the same need to be authentic.
