Editorial Reviews

The idea behind Barrel Brothers is what the people have asked and come to know the two wordsmiths for; pure lyricism. Skyzoo, known for his picturesque storytelling and jazz/orchestrial background, and Torae, known for his gritty Coney Island depictions of life with a vintage but modern lyrical approach, have briefly put their normal forte s to the side and crafted this album with one game plan in mind; lyrical exercise over hard New York City soundscapes. The current resurgence of NYC hip-hop is perfect grounds for two of its premier flag holders to continue doing what they never stopped doing in the first place; representing the city.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dread Solo's 'Barrel Brothers' Review July 3, 2014
Format:Audio CD
'Barrel Brothers' is a walk through New York City, taking the listener as close to the city as a pedestrian himself without actually being there. New York City hip-hop is a touchy subject to many, and arguably the most precious scene, carrying hip-hop's original essence for 30+ years. Skyzoo and Torae took you to Brooklyn with this project, lyrically casting a short film, with the listener as the lead role. Skyzoo's collaboration project alongside producer 9th Wonder 'Cloud 9 : The 3 Day High' gained him his street credibility as a true Brooklyn emcee. Since than, he has been consistently throwing jabs under the radar and a stand-up member of Duck Down Records. In 2009 Torae released his debut album with producer Marco Polo 'Double Barrel' and gained underground recognition, also as a Brooklyn representative and raw emcee. Multiple projects later the two of them link and drop this long anticipated album.

It seems evident that 'Barrel Brothers' was devoted much time and thought, considering the insanely prominent line-up of producers and features. Dj Premier, Jahlil Beats, Oh No, and Black Milk are responsible for some of the production, which those names alone made me want to purchase this album. With 14 tracks, "Blue Yankee Fitted" being the first single off the album, the listener will not be disappointed. "Blue Yankee Fitted" hit the refresh button that New York hip-hop needed, with raw, passionate lyrics, staying close to the raw New York sound that is humbly needed in today's game. Torae and Skyzoo exhibited a true passion for their hometown on this single.

"Movie Album" is listed as a skit on the record, but it presents a lyrical Power Point; metaphorically comparing the album to a film. This absolutely reigns true.

This album is a modern day Hip Hop classic. It has that old New York City vibe but they do it without sounding stale and played out. This is a must have for any true fan of Hip Hop.
