Editorial Reviews

"Baseball's troubadour poet laureate...creates a new chapter in the folklore of our national pastime." -- Tim Wiles, director of research, National Baseball Hall of Fame Library

"Breathless tales...short of the most pleasing voices in the genre." -- Creative Loafing (Charlotte, North Carolina)

"Brodsky hits these tracks out of the park...These are tales of baseball’s quirky, dedicated and sometimes unloved participants." -- Asheville Citizen-Times (June, 2002)

"Brodsky turns his eye for irony on the whole of baseball history, and comes up with some spectacularly improbable stories." -- PopMatters

"Often overlooked when critics remark on Brodsky’s baseball tunes is that these are, first and foremost, people stories." -- The Herald-Sun (Durham, NC)

"One of the most insightful and well-rounded collections of baseball songs in recent memory...classics worthy of the national pastime." -- Baseball America (November 11 - 24, 2002)

"The CD's a history lesson, delivered by an excellent storyteller, that serves up some of the odder personalities in baseball." --

"These songs are not so much about baseball as they are about people...vehicles for larger messages." -- Dirty Linen

"This is a grand-slam home run of an album!" -- Dirty Linen, February/March 2003

"Tremendous new CD...This is gorgeous music that might even teach you a little baseball history while you're singing along." -- Jayson Stark,

Product Description

Nine highly acclaimed original baseball story-songs. Among the characters covered on this cd are Eddie Klepp (first white man to play in the Negro Leagues), Moe Berg (a catcher who also was a US spy just before WWII), Max Patkin (Clown Prince of Baseball), Dock Ellis (who pitched a no hitter under the influence of LSD), Richie Allen (booed by racist Philadelphia fans, he’d write "b-o-o" in the dirt in response), Fred Bonehead Merkle (whose baserunning error cost the NY Giants the pennant in 1908), and Eddie Waitkus (shot by a female stalker, his story was the basis for the movie "The Natural").

5.0 out of 5 stars Chuck Hits A Home Run March 1, 2005
Format:Audio CD
I had the pleasure of seeing Chuck perform some of these songs one fine sunny afternoon before a Tourists' game at McCormick field. The music on the CD will make you feel as though your sitting in the bleachers at Wrigley Field in 1967 and the wind is blowing out, and Richie Allen is coming to the plate for the Phillies and you just know that the Cubs are going to lose again, but, hey, the beer is cold and it's not February. It's not all sunshine and apple pie, however, as Chuck covers some of baseballs darker and infamous stories most notably "Letters In The Dirt". Chuck writes with a light and clever touch. You can't help but doff your cap to him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it now, immediately, absolutely November 28, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I hate baseball and yet I love this CD. Actually, I love anything he does, but the lyrics on this CD are particularly funny, poignant, and true (what do I know, I hate baseball). It is a delight of singer-songwriter ballads.

5.0 out of 5 stars This hit a home run for me. March 6, 2012

My family of baseball enthusists loves this cd. My brother, who reads loads of baseball books, even learned some interesting baseball trivia that was not already known to him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heard it first on Pandora and had to make a purchase September 12, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I bought this after hearing "Moe Berg: The Song" on Pandora. What a great song. And the album doesn't disappoint. It is a simple premise. Ten simple folks songs about baseball. How much more America can you get.
