For the past decade, the Batali family spends many weeks in Northern Michigan at a blue roofed, pink and orange walled summer house on Grand Traverse Bay in the Leelanau Peninsula. They have a kitchen and an outdoor pizza oven, and the family cooks a lot, and the kids have obviously paid attention. For Mario's 50th birthday, his sons prepared a cookbook of favorite family foods, and Susi Cahn (their mother) took pictures. That homemade birthday gift is now a book; and Mario has added some additional already published recipes that he loves to serve for his family.

There are about 17 recipes in part one of the book. And there are about 16 recipes in part two (Mario's Family Favorites).

The part one recipes range from Cinnamon Swirl French Toast and Brown Sugar Pancakes to Sloppy Sloppy Joes and Franny's Sunshine Cake (Birthday Cake). The French Toast begins with slices of cinnamon bread, and adds eggs, milk, nutmeg and more cinnamon. The pancakes begin with flour and baking powder and uses light brown sugar. The Batali brothers scramble their eggs in virgin olive oil. And they were eating kale salad in lemon dressing (zest the lemon with a grater like a Microplane) long before kale became de rigueur in Manhattan. Their whole roasted chicken uses 1.5 cups of pickle juice and 8 cloves of garlic. (the homemade pasta uses... Mario Batali's bottled pasta sauce "available at your local market." Yes, his sons have learned well) Their Triple P Salad (Potatoes, Peas and Pesto) is a must try from the book.

Very well done. As a parent and grandma, I would be so proud. I see the love and feel the love of your son's joy in the kitchen. Hope you both come out with more amazing cook books and family fun. Enjoyed this adventure, keep it up.

Here they come - the Batali Boys! With photos by their mother, this is truly a family project. The book was apparently a birthday gift for their father, Mario. (Yes, THAT Mario!) And Dad augmented the recipes with a few of his own, carefully chosen to be easy enough for young people to master and to be a hit at a family table. The recipes ARE easy and family-friendly. But they are also very good indeed. To be blunt, if you are overwhelmed by the idea of learning to cook Italian food, start here. If you want to encourage your youngsters to be more active in the kitchen, start here. If you are just looking for a few ideas for your own table, start here. This is a charming book with a decent selection of recipes that will easily please the cook and the eaters!

I gave this to my 15 year old grandson who is a budding chet. I had seen it and the Batali boys on THE CHEW but had to wait several weeks before it was available.

Grandson and i spent a wonderful day making home made pasta and then we had the family over and it was excellent.

This book is so good. Every recipe is a winner. Mario Batali did a superb job of teaching his children.

The recipes look good, but we were disappointed in the lack of photos, particularly since this is geared towards kids.

Too few recipes from the two kids themselves. The rest are rehash of the elder Batali. I should have returned the Kindle book.

This book also has their dad Mario Batali recipes which is a nice bonus. The kale salad is great! can't wait to try the other recipes.
