This book is the single text that got me interested in Prussian militarism and General von Moltke who figures largely in this account. If you are interested in this period of history for academic reasons or are writing some kind of paper, I recommend this book wholeheartedly. There is one caveat, however, that I must bring up and that is that this book assumes that the reader has at least a moderate knowledge of Imperial German and military history.

I took some time and researched some of the primary sources used in this book and Craig was spot on in his use of them. In a time of increasing specialization (and less competence) in Academia; Gordon Craig shows that it was the great men of history who changed it.

Gordon Craig gives a clear and highly readable account of the most infuential battle of the 19th century. This should be required reading for anybody trying to understand modern German history. The author uses excellent source material to bring a contemporary narretive and evaluation to this historical milestone.

Excellently written by an author who really knows how to get to his main point, and tell a story well. This book gives a large scale, strategic account of the campaign, not the type of regimental history that many writers of the American Civil War tend to deliver. But I prefer this approach. The best anecdote from the book is when Von Moltke proudly proclaims certain victory to the king in the middle of battle. After poor decisions, the Austrian general is able to rally his troops to prevent complete disaster, but still loses his reputation. Great book, highly recommended.

This book is a great read, covering all the important facts involved in the German War, between Prussia, Austria, and their allies. Unlike The Franco-Prussian War: The German Invasion of France 1870-1871, this text is brisk and engaging, and never feels like a boring history lesson. The combination of good research based writing and an style which makes it feel like a collection of anecdotes and stories seamlessly blended together, anyone with an interest in military or German history outside of the World Wars should definitely give this book a read.

Before I read this book I knew nothing about this battle. After I now could see a wargame based upon. Did not know the historical importance of this battle or the people involved. Try this book and see for yourself
