5.0 out of 5 stars Charming Collection of Delicate Beaded Edgings January 12, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Includes 18 charming designs for delicate, decorative beaded edgings that can be attached to scarves, wedding veils, collars, ponchos, or anything else that strikes your fancy! Edgings are constructed from beads that are pre-strung onto thread or yarn, and combined into dangling motifs (butterflies, roses, bells, grapes, stars, etc.), looping fringes, or elegant "braid" borders. The edgings are constructed using simple crochet techniques (instructions included), sometimes combined with off-loom-beading techniques.

At the front of the book, there are photographs, including clear, close-up, "under construction" photographs, of each design. At the back of the book, there are "pattern pages", which include crochet/beading charts and descriptions of exact quantities and types of materials used, for each design. At the back there is also a full explanation of how to securely attach the edgings to any edge, curved or straight.

Easy-to-find materials include beads (round, bugle, wooden, specialty), sequins, yarn (crochet thread, embroidery floss, nylon beading thread, hemp yarn, lace yarn), crochet hooks, and beading needles. Edgings can be made from lighter or heavier materials to suit the item to be decorated, such as a silk scarf or a pair of cowboy boots.

The book also includes a brief discussion of traditional Turkish "oya" edgings, along with an inspirational photograph of a collection of oya-edged scarves. (This photo is used for the book's cover photo). Although the book does not include specific pattern instructions for these designs, many crocheter/beaders will be able to duplicate the designs after trying out the techniques that are described in the book.

This book offers "eye candy" for anyone who loves beaded decoration, along with excellent technical information on how to create beautiful beaded edgings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous crochet and beading technique February 23, 2011
Format:Paperback
The Beaded Edge by Midori Nishida and CRK design is one of those books that proves how much the boundaries blur in handicrafts and art. Combining crocheting with beads to make gorgeous edgings that can be used in sewing and to embellish other crafts.
The techniques range from doing a basic crocheted edging and adding in beads with a needle and thread to some wonderful designs with the beads crocheted in to the design.
If you've found crocheted ropes and single crochet designs too limiting, this book is a great example of how much is possible.
Loops of beads create fringe, pretty little butterflies and elegant scallops. The threads used are mostly cotton crochet threads with steel hooks. They are well photographed and applied to a bunch of projects to inspire uses. Cards, jeans, sweaters and felt ornaments are all among the suggested uses.
As a crocheter and beader, I love this book. Some of the edgings are made simply enough that once you have the beads threaded, the motifs can be repeated easily while watching television. One of my favorites is just that sort of motif. The Soap Bubbles design is all one color bead, and it's a design that works an inch at a time until it's long enough. The example shown is edging pockets on a pair of jeans, but I can just as easily imagine it as a fine edging on a pair of gloves.
There are photographs to show how the motifs of the edgings are made and how they progress, with the instructions in the back of the book. Each page has the page number for that pattern. The patterns are both in international crochet notation and in very clear American terminology text, with more photos to show how the piece is made and stringing diagrams. I prefer international charts to text for patterns, so that made me very happy.
The book also included a few pages on the inspiration for the edgings, Turkish "oya" edgings used to edge scarfs. There are some beautiful photographs of some of those edgings, and photographs from the author's trip to Turkey. These add a nice personal touch and history to the edgings.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful book April 1, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book because I recently became interested in learning how to do beaded crochet. This is a beautiful book, with clear photographs and instructions. It has inspired me to try all kinds of beaded edgings for purchased clothing and accessorie, as well as for the final touch on items I have crocheted myself. What a great way to dress up a plain T shirt or turn a plain jeans skirt into something special. The only thing I regret about the book is that it doesn't say anything about how to attach the beaded edgings one you've crocheted them....had to figure that out myself but it wasn't hard. I would have been nice if this book had a paragraph or two about that in the general instructions at the beginning of the book. That's my only suggestion. I highly recommend this book for crocheters.
