Biography

"The story began in Harold Macmillan’s “never had it so good” ’50s Britain. It should be fiction: four teenagers with no more than eight O’Levels between them, running and biking and busing and busking all over Liverpool in search of new chords and old guitars and half-decent drum kit and any gig at all.
They were determined to amount to something – ... Read more in Amazon's The Beatles Store

Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered edition of this collection from the Fab Four comprised entirely of #1 hits from UK and the U.S, For the 2009 remasters, each track was remastered by a dedicated team of engineers at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London over a four year period utilizing state of the art recording technology alongside vintage studio equipment, carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analogue recordings. The result of this painstaking process is the highest fidelity the catalog has seen since its original release. The 32 page booklet remains faithful to the original, featuring a foreword by George Martin, along with international cover art, as well as recording and release information on each one of the #1 tracks on the CD.

This CD has all of the beatles best songs!!!!
S.S. Happy
The cardboard package is similar to the remasters only it's two-sided for this album and the booklet is practically identical to the original.

When this album was announced in 2000, a lot of Beatle fans wondered, "Why?" Most fans already owned these songs on the 1962-1966 (Red) Remastered and 1967-1970 (Blue) Remastered collections, not to mention the original albums/CDs, and The Beatles: 20 Greatest Hits [Vinyl LP] [Stereo] flopped in the early 1980s (although it did become a steady back-catalog seller later on).

Well, thanks to a shrewd marketing campaign by Apple and EMI that targeted younger listeners (which Apple needs to do more of, lest this great music die, before the "Glee" crowd turns it into hip-hop crap), BEATLES 1 became one of the best selling albums of all time, and led to the release of other career-spanning "number 1" CDs, such as Elv1s 30 #1 Hits, Number Ones by The Bee Gees, The #1's (Eco-Friendly Packaging) by Diana Ross and The Supremes, and other compilations such as The Rolling Stones' Forty Licks. Even old-time Beatle fans loved the album, because of the convenience of having 27 great #1 songs on a single CD, and the sound quality was far superior to most of the Beatles CDs available at the time.

I don't need to say much about the Beatles music. Everyone who even stops by this page will already have at least somewhat of an understanding of its genius and its lasting power. What I want to review is the "1" collection itself, and the new remasters.

First off, "1" is a set of hit singles. Only the A sides. I much prefer the 2-CD "Past Masters" set which has both A and B sides back-to-back. That leads me to my second gripe. "Past Masters" was remastered in 2009 as well. And since this release of "1" uses the same masters as the ones in 2009, it is generally useless, since anyone who bought the box set or the individual sets will already have the same versions as here. And to be honest, I think "1" was a pointless idea in the first place because you need more to complete the Beatles' story. I don't even think the "1962-66" and "1967-70" sets nail that one, although they are the ones that come the closest.

Now, on to the remasters. I took the time of burning a CD with the original takes and the remastered versions of each song back-to-back and I listened with headphones to really tell the difference. In many cases, the 2009 versions sound lifeless, in my opinion, which really isn't good for a Beatles record. The originals had more of a warm feeling to them, whereas the new ones sound cold and dead.

I am still giving this three stars just because, after all, it's still The Beatles we're talking about.

I would recommend steering away from "1" and get the original, NOT 2009, version of the two "Past Masters" CDs for your collection of singles.

Granted this CD has been a great boon to the Beatles or their heirs, but for pre-existing fans, who needs it? It's easy enough to go through one's Beatles collection and pull off some number ones, if that's what turns you on. I mean, the whole rationale for this exercise was some genius at Apple realizing that all these number ones would just barely fit onto an 80-minute CD.

And, to cap off the Beatles' #1 hit-making career with the Phil Spectorization of `The Long and Winding Road' is like a tasteless April fool's joke, and come to think of it, the track WAS Spectorized (murdered) on April Fool's Day 1970. Great song--absolutely appalling over-production. I haven't been able to force myself to listen all the way through it in decades.

There's nothing sacrosanct about a number 1. Consider the following alternative list of great Beatles songs (in no particular order) that would easily match the contents of `1' for quality: I Am the Walrus, Drive My Car, I'm Down, Got to Get You Into My Life, With a Little Help from My Friends, Twist and Shout, A Day in the Life, Don't Let Me Down, Back in the USSR, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Here Comes the Sun, Taxman, Fool on the Hill, Please Please Me, Sgt. Pepper's Reprise, Rain, She's a Woman, Here There & Everywhere, Strawberry Fields Forever, Revolution, Blackbird, Norwegian Wood, In My Life, Yer Blues, Golden Slumbers/Carry That Eight/The End, Across the Universe. Hmmm...why hasn't Apple done a `critic's choice' Beatles compilation as a sequel to `1'?

This new version of their #1 hits uses the same remasters issued two years ago. Like the original, the first three tracks are in mono. The cardboard package is similar to the remasters only it's two-sided for this album and the booklet is practically identical to the original. The tracks here were chart-toppers in the US and/or UK and give an excellent overview of their extraordinary career even though it only scratches the surface. If you're a new fan, you found a great place to start. If you're a die-hard fan, it's not as essential but is great to have if you like the remasters better.
