Over the last three decades several series and/or CD box sets have boastfully purported to be "The Beatles the Complete BBC Sessions," the most recent being up to 25 CDs and having an accompanying DVD. No such collection can possibly be complete: This book, written by BBC Producer and Author, Keven Howlett documents all of the Beatles BBC Radio and TV appearances from 1962-1971, showing sadly how much of the original BBC material was erased, lost, stolen. Most of the BBC Sessions that are in existence (and make appearance on the Live At The BBC (Remastered) and the forthcomingOn Air - Live At The BBC Volume 2 are because they were home-recorded by dedicated fans using primitive remote microphones and reel-to-reel recorders to make recordings of the radio broadcasts. Thankfully much video material has been saved, as previously cataloged in Jon Winn's "Lifting Latches." This book will also work as a companion to the 1st and forthcoming 2nd BBC Radio sets as well as the aforementioned 'complete' BBC collections.

I like these sort of reproduction books, with removable documents, ticket stubs, mini-flyers and posters. This was an aspect of Beatles history that well deserves a magnification, and the fan will get it here! Wonderful stuff for us Beatlemaniacs these days!

Be aware that due to different publishers, there are different prices for the UK and U.S. Editions of this book. The material contained is identical in each edition, but the U.S.

"The Beatles: The BBC Archives" by Kevin Howlett is a collection of the transcripts of The Beatles' appearances on BBC Radio/Television from 1962 to 1970.

Kevin Howlett who is recognized expert on group appearances on the BBC spent three decades of his career writing about The Beatles, and also running a radio show where he was discussing their appearances on BBC.
Therefore, this book can be considered as collection of everything on which he worked his entire professional career.

He nicely presented his book dividing it into several chapters, each covering one year of their career, from 1962 up to the 1970; each chapter starts with an introduction on two pages where author is describing what were the major events that marked that year in States, UK and worldwide, not only in music, but also what was happening in movies, TV, even politics.

After this brief prelude, each chapter is providing chronologically listed appearances of The Beatles during particular year, how and why they were on the BBC radio or TV programs, intertwining it with the transcripts of interviews that were conducted during these appearances.

Due to the reason that they stop appearing in radio and TV from year 1965, it was very interesting to read about their interviews in remaining years that were given by group members in special circumstances.
In this part of book even readers which are very familiar with The Beatles will be able to learn some new information about group like for example who decided for group to stop appearing in media.

In last part of book, reader will find nice list of people and songs that impacted The Beatles, starting from Motown singers, Chuck Berry, Elvis and some more which are not so famous to general public.

I enjoyed reading the book itself very much, and I was happy not to pay the hefty price that the paper version goes for, but I foolishly assumed that a book that was hyped as much as it was for showing illustrations of contracts and letters and such would have larger renderings of those illustrations on my screen. I'm viewing on a Kindle Fire HDX and the illustrations are miniscule and pixelated to the point of uselessness. With legible graphic content, this would be an outstanding example of the potential of ebooks. As it is, it's a grossly lost opportunity. If you're looking to see the pictures, learn from my mistake and spend the money on the paper book.

This Beatles: The BBC Archives: 1969-1970 is a really nice book. It has some great interviews, fabulous pictures and nice stories as well as a list of songs that were played by The Beatles on each of the shows. If you are looking for something on The Beatles and the BBC radio shows, this is the book to get. It will go great with The Beatles At The BBC (Volumes 1&2) CD's that have been released by Apple Records. There is a complete Beatles At The BBC package, but it is not an official Apple release. It is hard to find and fairly expensive.

For anyone who is a big fan of The Beatles or know someone who is this is a great book to get. Chock full information "The BBC Archives" is 336 pages of rare photos and previously unpublished interviews with the four lads that helps give a complete look at their lives and stories of the group. I am a huge fan myself and know a lot of the history behind the Beatles but I have managed to learn a thing or two while I have been reading this book. It has been most interesting to read and very enjoyable for someone who considers themselves to be a fan of the Fab Four.

In addition to the book there is a folder with facsimiles of documents from the BBC involving the Beatles and a photographic print of the Beatles from the BBC files. For the casual fan of the group this might be interesting but really this is for the hard core Beatles fans. This is a little bit pricey but it is worth it what with the amount of information you get between these 336 pages. I recommend this for anyone who thinks of themselves as a Beatlemaniac.
