Editorial Reviews

Review

"This visually enticing look at the solo careers of each of the four Beatles has the feel of a lovingly crafted fan scrapbook. Festooned with a caricature of its subject on the cover, each slim volume is packed with pull-out quotes and photographs. Journalist and author Snow’s (former editor,Mojo magazine) genuine enjoyment of these musicians is evident from his wordplay, callbacks to previous songs, and snappy chapter and subheading titles (“A Real Everywhere Man,” “Dark Hoarse”). However, he isn’t blinded by his admiration, allowing himself to be critical of the artists’ endeavors when necessary. In general, Snow is far more enthusiastic when providing analysis of the quartet’s creative output than he is when discussing details of their personal lives. Because these are concise overviews rather than in-depth examinations, fans who want more comprehensive portraits would do better to seek out biographies of the individual Beatles (Philip Norman’s John Lennon: The Life is an especially strong offering). VERDICT Although there’s no shortage of material on the Fab Four, this charming and attractive title will appeal to pop culture and music fans, particularly those looking for an introduction to John, Paul, George, and Ringo post-Beatles." - Library Journal

The packaging is beautiful, but the information is very underwhelming. Any Beatles fan who would be willing to shell out the dough for this already knows everything in here. This is a very cursory overview of the solo careers of the four artists, and I mean VERY. It should have been so much better with much more detail. I'm disappointed.

This is not a "chronicle", or "an examination of their individual music catalogs", and it is certainly not "all here". It's a superficial summary of the solo years with a lot of pictures. Most of the thickness and weight is the box and the hard covers of the four 96 page books. Mentioning that the author writes for Mojo creates expectations this publisher was not prepared to support.

…..really nothing new here. If you like pictures and (basically) old info…get this. If you are looking for something new - I'd move on to something else. Great packaging - but content was thin.

I have to add my opinion to those who were unimpressed, although this might be okay for younger, uninitiated fans, I was also unimpressed and barely interested enough to read things I already knew. There's no discography, and it's annoying that this is split into four books. This is a sloppy work. I would make it a gift for someone, but I don't think it's good enough to be a gift.

It's tired analysis that we've all read before by an author who is a Lennon fanboy. Yawn. Been there, done that. The author's anti-Paul pot shots quickly become boring. He really doesn't know anything about Paul's music. He doesn't understand it so his analysis is thin and cheap. Don't waste your money.

For the experienced Beatle fan and amateur Beatle historian this book is a maximum of two stars. However, if the owner is going to be a person between the ages of 12-15 or someone just looking to begin learning about The Beatles, this is a five star book. It is written in simple language and doesn't get into the nitty-gritty of their lives. It covers all their major albums and film releases and is well illustrated, but for someone looking for dense information and fact-finding, this is an absolute pass-over. I'd recommend any of Mark Lewisohn's Beatle books in its place.

It is a disappointment. It comes across as covering their musical careers, post Beatles, but has no discography. I thought the author would have done a more album by album analysis of each solo career.
