There has always been debates about the sonic differences between Toshibas release and the rest of the worlds. I really do not think Toshibas sounds any different but I can assure you they do sound at least as good. The Wood Box is a Joke. Concentrate on getting the discs & 2 booklets. I was lucky to receive this as a gift. It is nice to have these just for the reaction Beatle fans have. I think everyone would be better served by a REMIX of the original recordings. But George Martin probably would be reluctant and I can see why. If all of the Band was alive and well and could participate he would probably be happy to do so. But I also see why he would be happy to leave the versions that were so great as they were when released just as they are. Hope I made some sense. Do not spend over $200 for this or you will probably feel ripped off in my opinion.

This set has been completely replaced by the remastered stereo box set which has undeniably supperior sound, apparently at a much lower price.

However, released in 1988, this had been the ultimate CD box set of Beatles music containing the entire official Beatles canon, all thirteen UK albums plus the two disc Past Masters (a total of 211 songs/217 tracks on 16 CDs). The roll top case is very nice for storing, displaying, and accessing the discs. The booklet that came with mine provides a very nice description of the music, with nice pictures, although the binding is poor.

I bought this box set in 1999 after losing my CDs and records in a house fire. So, at that time, it was well worth the approximately $150 I paid for it.

The Beatles Box Set is a terrific package of terrific music, but is simply no longer necessary since the release of superior sounding collections. The case and booklet are nice to have, but not necessarily made to last, and certainly not worth the cost of buying this collection.

Okay, so everyone wants to bash this set because it contains the original 1987 versions of the beatles' catalog and not the spiffy 2009 remasters. I used to own this set myself, but I sold it a month before the remasters came out to help finance the mono box and the individual stereo releases. If I could have justified keeping it, I would have. It's a beautiful display piece with the black lacquer roll top box, and if you're a Beatles collector it's something you might want to pick up. Yes, the used CD bins are full of the individual 1987 CDs, but this will ultimately be a true collectors item. Anyway, the original CDs sounded pretty good....yes, the new ones do sound better on the whole with better separation and more overall range, but these really aren't so bad.
