Book Description

Some say we’re special, and that’s why we’re kept in seclusion. Beyond those walls evil lurks and innocent prey would be lost in minutes. Gone. Destroyed. Forgotten.
Others say the opposite: we’re locked away because there’s something wrong with us. If we roamed the outside world, we might taint the beautiful ones. A species so pure, that to merely be in their presence is a gift.

As for my beliefs…I’m not sure.

But I do know one thing: neither of those reasons explains why it is that they come for us only after we’ve passed the age of sixteen. Whether we want to go or not, we’re taken through those iron gates. Escorted away from the only home we’ve ever known, escorted to our destiny—whatever that destiny may be—never to be seen again.

The Beautiful Ones is a prequel intended to introduce Lori's newest Young Adult series. At around 21,000 words, this is a short story. This Young Adult Romance contains kissing, cursing and some violence. It is best for ages 14 and up.

The Beautiful Ones: Prequel
The Chosen Ones: Book 1

5.0 out of 5 stars great start.. February 19, 2014

good thing is that it was free, bad thing is that you have to wait for the actual 1st book to come out now.. this prequel definitely gets you hooked on the story and gets your foot in the door with the characters.. at this point, good guys could be bad and vice versa.. very quick read and a good cliffhanger of an ending, can't wait for the rest of the series..

5.0 out of 5 stars She does it again February 20, 2014

Lori has yet again written a book that grabs my attention from the first page. You can't put the book down. You want to know what happens to Jane and what the beautiful ones are all about. I can't wait for the next book to come out so I can find out what happened to Tom and why Thanatos would risk his life for Jane. I will count the days until I can read The Chosen Ones. I recommend this book to anyone that loves a little mystery and excitement in their books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful start! Can't wait for more! March 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I got this ebook on a whim, to be honest. I'd previously read Ms. Brighton's "The Mind Readers" (which I haven't gotten around to reviewing yet, though I plan on it) and while preparing to buy the rest of that series, I decided to download this as well, both because it was free and because I was curious to see if I'd enjoy her other work as much as I did "The Mind Readers." I was not at all disappointed.

This novella was captivating and I could not put it down for the life of me. It draws you in immediately and piques your interest within the very first few pages. The descriptions are vivid, but not overdone or too wordsy, and even in a small amount of words, I was able to get a great sense of the characters and their motivations. I loved the mystery aspect of the first half of it, wondering just who the beautiful ones were and what they wanted, and while I figured it out long before the actual reveal, that didn't make it any less pleasing for me -- I loved it! I think it was a very fresh take on a story like this, and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the genre.

Now I just have to wait for the first book to come out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next one! March 6, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I agree, she's done it again. I am really looking forward to reading where this goes! I have been completely submerged in several of the worlds Lori Brighton has created. She does a great job holding my interest, I've never been let down. The only downside of coming into the series with the very first book...having to wait so long for the next one!!
I almost feel like I can't say anything specific about this, because it's a prequel, a teaser, a short little nibble...I don't want to give any clues beyond the author's blurb. If I could say one thing that should be obvious, it's a prequel, people. Which kind of amounts to a short story...and there will be a cliffhanger ending! I've seen many people give bad reviews for the length of a prequel. I can only assume they don't understand what a prequel is, or that when you read a series, the end of one book very often tells where the next will begin. So, let's break it down: 1) short story to begin a series. 2) there's an ending that leaves you hanging. 3) it's very worth your time!!

4.0 out of 5 stars ~~Every 4th Sunday~~ March 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Every fourth Sunday, the Beautiful Ones show up to select 2 or 3 of the children in Jane's walled community. Ares, Baches and Thanatos have been the ones to select recently.

Jane is suspicious of being selected but at the same time, she yearns to know what is on the outside.

A most interesting read so far and after Jane's selection, the plot deepens.

Highly recommended. I will order the book when it is available as this is the prequel for it..

5.0 out of 5 stars Promising Start! October 2, 2014

'The beautiful Ones' (The Chosen Ones), by Lori Brighton
This was just a prequel to the series, which I now will have to read someday, but it was a good read all on its own. The foreshadowing was strong enough throughout that I can't say I was surprised by anything, but somehow that didn't take away the creepiness factor. Like in movies when I know something is about to grab the hero, and I jump even worse than if I'd been surprised. I get made fun of for that, but I don't care. It's the suspense that does it.
This is definitely scary in a vampire/demon kind of way, and although many questions were answered in just the short story, I have more that I look forward to investigating. The writing/editing is clean, the story moves along quickly without rushing, and the heroine is easy to get along with.
5 stars.
Language: The blurb says there is foul language, but I can't remember any.
Sexual Content: None.
Violence: Yeah, it's a little gruesome in one part, and my guess is that there's plenty more to come in the following series.
Over-all Message/Plot: Not a message story. I found no continuity errors or plot holes, and the plot was pretty straightforward: escape or die. But I don't want to make it sound boring--it was anything but boring. Great read for a night when you want something creepy without straight on horror.
