It was the mystery within it that first attracted me to The Beggars of Azure. Intrigued by its opening pages I happily made the purchase, unaware that it was ready to draw me into its little world at the earliest opportunity and monopolize my reading time. At first, the deliberate pace of the plot co-operated with my habit of reading snatches of different e-books during idle moments or as a break from other engaging books in my current reading stack. As the story developed, however, I became ever-more enthralled and was soon reading The Beggars of Azure to the exclusion of all else. Though the mystery was still present, the romantic aspects of the story were captivating, holding my attention even when I found them too painful to continue reading. Mr. Hill is an exceedingly gifted author, you see, and he has finely woven elements of the mundane and the fantastic into a tale that transcends its story and vividly evokes Courtly Love it in all of its glorious and exquisite agony. I became completely identified with the main character, sharing his hopes and suffering his torments like some lovesick teenager and when the novel finally wound its way to a fantastic conclusion, I was left with an undeniable yearning for more.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that loved romance or possessed a romantic streak. It is a steal at its overly-modest price and I'd love to purchase a physical copy of it if I could.
