Book Description

A short, sexy and scary read.

The Benson hotel in Portland, Oregon might look like your ordinary, swanky turn-of-the century hotel, but deep in the heart of this historic icon, lie a few restless souls with secrets that won't stay buried.

Amateur ghost hunters (and your favorite "will they or won't they" pair) Perry Palomino and Dex Foray spend an evening exploring the hotel for their Internet show "Experiment in Terror" - but this is no ordinary hotel and this is no ordinary episode. There's someone here in the Benson, someone dead, who will push the boundaries of what the duo know about ghosts and challenge Perry's very notion of the truth.

The Benson is a short novella  in the Experiment in Terror Series. It occurs between books #2 (Red Fox) and #3 (Dead Sky Morning) but can also be read as a standalone and is the perfect primer for anyone interested in the best-selling series.

From the Author

This is quick little book, a super condensed version of the series. I wanted it to explore the ghosts that our favorite ghosthunters talk about in the other novels, sort of like one of those "monster of the week" episodes that the X-Files would throw in the lineup, to give the audience a chance to breath, a welcome change of pace.

The Benson (EIT #2.5) gives new readers just enough to be scared, to be intrigued by Perry and Dex's relationship, to want to know more. At the same time, there's a very satisfying and tidy conclusion that isn't often found in the full-length novels. Overall, it's fun for the hardcore fans and a nice introduction to those wanting laughs, thrills and chills.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and sexy short story. January 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The Benson is a perfect introduction to the Experiment in Terror series. It's short, sweet and fun to read. What you get is a shortened version of the other books, with a creepy ghost story and more sexual tension between my favourite literary non-couple, Dex and Perry. If you're looking for a quick, fun read, this is it. But be careful, because you will be hooked!

5.0 out of 5 stars short, sweet, spooky fun February 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This little novella takes place shortly after the events of Red Fox. Dex and Perry are investigating a hotel in Portland close to where she lives. A posh hotel that goes back many years, the Benson has a history of ghost haunting and The Experiment in Terror dynamic duo are there to investigate, get it on film, and continue their web series.

This has the same fun feel as the previous two novels just in condensed format. It also manages to pack a good bit of tension and spookiness into a small package. It's a VERY quick read but that's ok. A little one off novella about a haunting here and there is a cool change of pace.

Halle does a good job of catching new readers up to speed on the previous events in Dex and Perry's life and goes into their non relationship a little bit. Although I can't recommend Darkhouse and Red Fox highly enough, this would be a good litmus test for anybody who's on the fence about trying it out. I'm sure it will leave new readers wanting to go back to the beginning and get all the rich back story of these great characters.

Now I'm off to start Dead Sky Morning. New readers, give this one a go! And for fans of the series this is a nice little fill in treat. Great stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Autumn Review for The Benson October 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is a novella, so it only took me about 30 minutes to read. What I liked the most about it was that it gave us an idea of what Perry and Dex work on in between big tapings.

The Benson is about a haunted hotel. Perry and Dex go to get footage for an upcoming show. Of course, Dex leaves Perry ALONE and that's when the magic happens. Despite the creepiness of the story, I liked how Perry actually helped the ghosts move on and find peace.

That's really about all I have to say on that. I liked it. It's worth reading as part of the series.

good continuation of the story, but short. If you hadn't read it, when they elude to it in the main series, you would be lost a bit, it's kind of like a little secret between you... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars short in betweener
This was an ok story from the series. I think it could have been a little longer. It was just straight to the point and over with. Not much story line.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not long enough
This was too short to really get into and it was missing the tension that Dex and Perry share so that was unfortunate. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars good read
This was a good read. Not a lot of suspense. All books in this series are like a soap opera / suspense novel. Too much romance and lust. But a good read never the less.

More About the Author

The daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out. Like many of the flawed characters she writes, Karina never knew where to find herself and has dabbled in acting, make-up artistry, film production, screenwriting, photography, travel writing and music journalism. She eventually found herself in the pages of the very novels she wrote (if only she had looked there to begin with).

Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently splits her time between her apartment in downtown Vancouver and her sailboat, where a book and a bottle of wine are always at hand.

Darkhouse is her first novel and the first one in the Experiment in Terror Series. Things only get better from here on in.
