Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-In keeping with the Berenstains' tradition, New Pup has an engaging plot and familiar illustrations. It is a basic beginning reader, with just a few simple sentences per page. The young bears' new pet does all the mischievous things that puppies do. This book is nothing new or unusual in text or art, but Berenstain Bears fans and dog lovers will appreciate it.-Laurel L. Iakovakis, Douglas County Libraries, Castle Rock, CO

About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain were already successful cartoonists for magazines and adult humor books when they began writing children's books. The first story starring the bear family, The Big Honey Hunt, appeared in 1962. Since then, more than 370 Berenstain Bears books have been published, and more than 300 million copies have been sold. What began as an idea sparked by their young sons' love of reading has become over the years arguably the best-selling children's book series ever.

Since their inception, the Berenstain Bears stories have expanded to include picture books, beginning readers, and chapter books--even a hit TV show on PBS. Writing and illustrating the books has become a Berenstain family affair. Mike joined with his parents as a creative team in the late 1980s. The Bear family has expanded over the years as well. Sister Bear arrived in 1974, and baby Honey joined the family in 2000.

Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Berenstain Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania.

Since Stan's death at age eighty-two in 2005, Jan and Mike have continued to write and illustrate wonderful new adventures for Mama, Papa, Brother, Sister, and Honey Bear. They live in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, which looks a lot like Bear Country.

Format: Paperback
This is a new series (published 2005) from Stan & Jan Berenstain. This particular book is a number "1" Beginning Reader. The story begins with a trip to the farm for eggs. Farmer Ben's dog, Queenie, has had puppies so, of course, the children are entranced and want to take one home. Mama manages to put up a good fight until Farmer Ben puts a sweet, warm, puppy in her arms. Oh, well... we know how that goes. Puppies have a way of melting hearts.

My children (3 and 5; boy and girl) like this book and so do I. Besides being a straightforward story, it touches on all of the 'puppy' raising issues. Little Lady (their dog) leaves a puddle in one corner, and a 'calling card' in another. [I like that the artwork shows the kids cleaning up, not mom or dad.]

The puppy also gets into things she shouldn't and makes a mess, even of the recently purchased eggs. The story ends with mama saying that she is going back to Farmer Ben's. "You're not going to take Little Lady back to Farmer Ben's" cry the children. Well, of course not, mama replies. She's going to get more eggs.

All in all, a great book for parents to read to children when the 'doggie adoption' issue comes up.

Four Stars. Better than average Berenstain Bear book with simple sentences that make a good read-aloud. The story is one that children can relate to.

A sample of the text follows for you to determine the reading level for yourself:

(From the second page of text)

"Look!" said Brother. "There is a sign on Farmer Ben's barn door."

The sign said PUPS FOR SALE!

"Hmm," said Mama.

"Farmer Ben's dog, Queenie, must have had pups."

Though this series of An I Can Read Book is labeled as a Level 1 Beginning Reading Book, I felt that it is more of a Level 2 book because of some of the higher vocabulary used. My daughter is five-and-a-half and will start kindergarten this fall, and we both felt that these books were a step up from other level one books, for example the Step Into Reading series. Though she was able to read this book independently, I just feel parents should be aware that this book has some advanced vocabulary which beginning readers might have some difficulty with, e.g.:

"She left a puddle in one corner...and a calling card in another."
"She got into Mama's baking flour."
"She got into Papa's fishing tackle."

The books in the series have engaging storylines and each page has beautiful full-color illustrations. This particular story explores the cubs' fascination and yearning for a pup they see at a farm, and how the cubs', Mama and Papa cope with having a new pup at home. This is an excellent series that will motivate young children to read.

I loved reading this book to my 5 year old son. He wants a puppy badly and this was a great story to introduce the care needed for a pet. However I bought this book for him to read as he is a good reader for his age. This book however should be rated at a level 2. I would buy it again to read but not for a new reader to read.
