From the Inside Flap

Sister Bear watches Dr. Bearson fill Brother Bear's small cavity. Then it's her turn in the chair to have a dangling baby tooth removed. An entertaining story for preschoolers of a cheerful and informative visit to a dentist.

About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia.  They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.  They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.  During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory.  When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines.  After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.  Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt.  It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears."

Stan and Jan planned all of their books together. They both wrote the stories and created the pictures.  They continued to live outside of Philadelphia in the country.  There are now over 300 Berenstain Bears books.

My son likes the book. It was on a list on a dentists web site to help him cope with his first dentist visit.
I recommend this book.

Grab this book - this one should be in every library! It's a great hit at our house because in places, it's quite funny! Sister wakes up one morning with a loose tooth and thus, talks funny! The words are spelled as such so my little one gets quite the chuckle out of how sister says certain "s" words! Anyway, sister spends the entire day wiggling her loose tooth until it's time to take brother to the dentist for his checkup. The dentist finds that brother has a cavity and lets sister stand over the chair and watch while he fills brother's tooth. Brother does try to torment sister quite a bit about how the dentist is going to "yank our her loose tooth," so she is somewhat timid to get into the chair. However, she does and while she is busy asking questions and looking at the dentist's "yanker," the dentist feels her tooth in a cloth, wiggles it around and out it comes! Sister had no idea it even happened! She's pretty excited and thrilled about all of it and was very glad that brother was wrong about the yanker! She gets a dime from the tooth fairy and was very excited!

This book does an excellent job in describing what happens when you go to the dentist. It's great for getting rid of those little jitters and it really is accurate. Great job and I highly recommend it!

I bought this book for my 3 year old son, intending to use it to help prepare him for his first visit to the dentist. It really wasn't a visit to the dentist book. Sister Bear has a loose tooth and nervously tags along with Brother bear to his dentist visit (his visit isn't discussed at all). While the book does identify dental tools, which I suppose is good; I wasn't impressed with the manner. It was more Sister Bear looked at the dental tool tray (while brother bear was getting checked I guess) and saw a 'water spraying thing...a scraping thing...etc'. Actually names and their uses aren't explained.

Ultimately the dentist pulls out Sister Bear's loose tooth, which I thought was unnecessary. And there isn't any follow up, such as rinsing your mouth out afterwards, or a discussion on the importance of baby teeth, etc.

Anyway, it was a rather long story too, especially since my son's not a huge Berenstain Bears fan and it really didn't go in the direction I was hoping, i.e. a step by step visit to the dentist, waiting room, meeting the dentist, sit in the chair (moves up and down), open wide, counting teeth, the importance of brushing, this is tool X and it does Y, etc.

The book received good reviews from others, so perhaps it just wasn't what I was looking for.

I ordered this book to help my 3-year-old daughter get excited about her first trip to the dentist, but I was disappointed when it arrived and I read it all the way through. This book involved Sister Bear being afraid of the dentist, and the dentist eventually pulling out a loose tooth for her. My daughter doesn't really have a good concept of loose teeth yet (who needs a dentist for a child's loose tooth, anyway?), and I didn't want to scare her into thinking the dentist was going to pull out her teeth. I ended up ordering a different book that focused on all the neat things the dentist would do, and never read this one to my daughter at all.

This book was really helpful in preparing my son for his first dentist appointment. He was much calmer and the dental technician even held up her tools and matched them with what was in his book.
