5.0 out of 5 stars Test Drive This Year's Anthologies October 9, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This sampler is a great idea.

Every year, the series editors each select a hundred or so of the best essays or stories for possible inclusion in their anthologies. The guest editors then narrow the hundred down to around twenty for publication.

So while the quality is consistently excellent, I'm always amazed at how the guest editor's influence can affect the tone of the collection. A couple that stand out in my memory are the The Best American Essays 2006 guest edited by Lauren Slater and The Best American Travel Writing 2008 guest edited by Anthony Bourdain. Slater's selections were heavily on the gloomy side, while Bourdain's choices were extra manly, no girls allowed.

If, like most of us, you don't have the time or money to scoop up all the anthologies in the series, this sampler is a handy way to help you decide which ones to get and which to skip this year.

The sampler contains eleven selections from six of the volumes:

The Best American Short Stories 2011, guest editor Geraldine Brooks
Housewifely Arts by Megan Mayhew Bergman
Phantoms by Steven Millhauser

The Best American Essays 2011, guest ed. Edwidge Danticat
Chapels by Pico Iyer
There Are Things Awry Here by Lia Purpura

The Best American Mystery Stories 2011, guest ed. Harlan Coben
A Crime of Opportunity by Ernest J.

Good read with much variety. Science was best. Fiction least strong, while sports was pleasant surprise. Glad I read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Various Delights February 19, 2014

I thought that this book was a collection of short-story fiction, but not so! Instead a variety of themes and styles, mostly first-rate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love, love, love... January 27, 2014
By Robert
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Best American series is one of the most enjoyable compilation books/series I've ever discovered. I'm particularly fond of the Short Stories. They're always thought provoking and leave me wanting more. One of my most favorite stories ever came from this series. This sampler gives you a little from each of the Best American series and is definitely worth the price of free. I would recommend this six ways to Sunday!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed October 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a lover of short stories, this collection came up short on quality for me. Usually these collections are great; this one left me wondering why the editor would choose these selections.

2.0 out of 5 stars BEST books better than the sampler
I enjoy some of the BEST books but not all. the collection includes samplings from the books I do not care for as well as those I enjoy. I should have & will buy the ones I enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Little Lean on Stories
Certainly for the price, it is a perfectly good sampler but I expected more than the 15 or so stories I found in it. I read nearly all of them and several were quite interesting. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars The Rating depends on an individual’s preference.
How do you rate an annual sample of America’s best work? Hopefully it is better than what an average person would expect, but only half would agree on that. Read more

A decent collection of short stories. Some are better than others, but overall, a good collection. The Best American Sampler series always delivers.

3.0 out of 5 stars where are the rest of them?
I thought the whole table of contents would be in the book, not just one from each category. I must have read the description wrong.

The sampler introduced me to some stories I would not have found on my own.
Great way to try something new.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short Stories
This is an ok book and a good read for when you have nothing else to do. Stories didn't move me, excite me, thrill me, or give me a lot of pleasure through suspense.
