Book Description

My birthday is 5 months, 3 weeks, 2 days, and 8 hours away. Today I'm starting to plan my party.

So what if the Big Day's not exactly around the corner? This little girl is planning her party now. She has to, if she wants to have the best birthday party ever. She'll have the tallest birthday cake in the world, plus camels, elephants, a ferris wheel (of course), and a castle . . . with a moat. Kids will laugh out loud at the girl's wild plans, and love the oh-so-sweet ending, which involves a modest but fun party. Jennifer LaRue Huget and LeUyen Pham brilliantly capture what it feels like to be the Birthday Girl—a feeling many children will relate to.

From the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars OK, forget the elephants January 14, 2012
What a fun book! I read this to my little granddaughters, who saw absolutely nothing preposterous in the plans, but what plans they are. The story starts several months before the big day, and proceeds with a monthly countdown, during which more outlandish elements are added to the proposed best birthday party ever. Joyous illustrations add to the excitement, and it's interesting to search for the characters referred to by the text. We'll be reading this again. And again. And we'll have great fun each time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative and entertaining for all ages December 7, 2011
Having endured endless "planning" discussions with our kids for their birthdays, Christmas, etc, I found this book particularly funny and enjoyable. Artwork is energetic and detailed, perfect accompaniment to the story.

We have three kids 8 and younger and read to them ALL the time. Our weekly trips to the library result in two very large bags of children's books, so I consider myself a pretty good judge of quality. Since you often end up reading some books to them over and over, quality really counts!

Other recent children's books I rate five stars are "Dexter Beasley and the Big Blue Beastie," "Click, Clack, Moo" and "Princess and the Pizza"

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read July 8, 2013

I ordered this book to use with a first grade writing lesson. The story's main character goes all-out planning her birthday and my students really enjoyed seeing the ideas she came up with. They didn't think some of her ideas were all that outlandish. ;) After reading, I asked the students to plan their best birthday party. The story provided an excellent jumping-off point for our discussions. It was a fun book to read with darling illustrations.
