Editorial Reviews

2008 marks the 40th anniversary of Bobby Womack's music career. He was a major soul superstar throughout the 70's with songs such as 'Across 110th Street', 'California Dreamin'', 'Woman's Gotta Have It', 'Harry Hippie' and many more. The Best Of Bobby Womack - The Last Soul Man gathers together 22 digitally remasteres tracks, including his chart hits and classic tracks. Still recording and performing at the age of 64, Bobby Womack is a true soul survivor, a musical torchbearer of life's trials and hardships. "I'm still writing music," says the music legend. "It's impossible to always rise to the occasion, but it's important that when the spirit has you, you work with it. That's when you have something to say - not because you're under pressure to prove to somebody that you're still here and valid." EMI. 2008.

i'm a huge fan of Bobby Womack and he made the kind of songs where you could relate and understand where he was coming from regardless if you wanted to or not. soulful vocals, songwriting and a trademark guitar picking. the Brother is bad and never has gotten his full due as a all around musical artist. he is very versatile. he always brings it soulful. this set is the fire.

Overall "good" compilation. It would have been great with "A Change is Gonna Come"; "If You Think Your'e Lonely Now, Wait Until Tonight" and "I Wish He Didn't Trust Me So Much" on it.

Growing up as a little girl listening to such soulful music created during my birth years had a great affect on me. I Love me some Bobby Womack, Womack and Womack, Sam Cooke and any affiliations he had on the music industry. I am deeply sadden to learn of his death but will continue to share with the world his music. This is one the GREATEST singers of all time and will always be remembered for his contributions to soul music. If you don't own an original copy of his music shame on you. Songs that will touch your heart include Harry Hippie in which everyone has one in their family, or knows a Harry Hippie. Oh and don't let me forget Mary Hippie, she's Harry lady.

Not only that, you hav ed to listen and pay close attention to California Dreaming, That's the way I feel about cha, across a 110th street and so much more.

RIP Mr. Womack... thanks for the wonderful music and thanks for the amazing guitar work on classic songs. I want to personally thank you for inspiring me as a singer and songwriter. You're music will live on in me. You're classic hit single "I Wish He Didn't Trust Me So Much," resonated with me that I had to cover this song, unfortunately it was never released to the public under the banner "Matell." But one day we will all be together "Looking for Love." Fans can hear "After Love Is Love by Matell and see your influences in the style in the music.

OK now this is what I call sanging! Yes I meant to say that because Mr Womack could really belt some lyrics. You know I'm 53 and remember the time when this man truly had it going on. Listening to some of the songs on this CD brought back great memories. I didn't know that he played the guitar and he plays that thing. That rough and ready voice magnificent. An exrta treat for me are the classics that were previous song by other artist, I applaud Mr Womack's version of all of them.
