About the Author

Babette is at home in a dog kennel, literally. She was raised in one by her mom, Betty-Ann, and father, the dog-training pioneer, Captain Haggerty, whom the New York Times credited with “establishing dog training as a respectable profession in this country.” She runs the Haggerty School for Dogs, splitting her time between Palm Beach and New York City.

This book is wonderful! It is clearly written and beautifully illustrated. The step by step directions with pictures make the book very easy to use. I was able to teach a young puppy to sit, stay and down from chapter one "Building Blocks" in a matter of two days . I was also able to teach an old dog a new trick pretty easily too. From chapter 7 "Show Off" I was able to teach my 4 year old dog to jump over my leg. Each chapter is chock full of neat tricks and I intend to get a lot of use out of this book.

It's a very well done book with great photography. I may be a bit biased since my Golden Retrievers are actually in the book, however, even if they were not, I would recommend the book because it has such a great variety of tricks presented in it and it explains how to teach the tricks to your dog.

This book gives you a clear cut view on how to teach your dog just about anything. It's easy to read, and very visual so you can follow it and apply the steps one at a time. This is a great book that helps you build and strengthen your bond with your dog. Highly recommend!

This is the best dog trick book I've read. I'm a visual person so the fact that everything is so well illustrated is a huge plus. There are enough tricks in this book to make your dog's head spin. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to teach their dog some tricks.

It is very easy to read and understand but I have not had much success with their techniques. I find my dog learns better not following their instructions.

The focus these days with books on trick training seems to be on how many different tricks you can pack into a book. Unfortunately, the result is sparse and often poor quality information on how to actually TRAIN the tricks. This book is a perfect example of this. Each trick is given a single page in the book most of which is taken up with the photos (which are nice large color photos so make for an attractive, well illustrated book). The actual information on how to train the tricks is seldom advice I personally would follow. These days, most people I know use a clicker and positive reinforcement/operant conditioning to teach tricks, but the information in this book is a mixture of old-fashioned methods of guiding the dog through the motions and using treats and praise (and unfortunately corrections as well) to try and get the dog to do them on cue. Troubleshooting often includes correcting the dog for not doing the trick the way you want them to ( a great way to totally ruin your dog's enthusiasm for something that should be all fun for both of you!) The author mentions using a clicker in the intro but there's no information at all on how a clicker is properly used, and when it's included in a trick, which is very rare, it's never used in a way that 99.9% of clicker trainers would agree with. The thing this type of book is best for is just to get some ideas for what tricks to train, and if you do need help coming up with ideas for tricks to train, it may be a good book to pick up in that case. But supplement it with some good books on clicker training and shaping behaviors (like ...Read more ›
