This 1997 Best Of CD is a compilation of selected tracks from Fourplays first three albums, 1991's self-titled debut, 1993s Between The Sheets, & 1995s Elixir plus three 'new' tracks. I must say though that this CD in my opinion is a bit too early in Fourplays career to really have a best of CD. The group have thrown out three CDs since this collection came with 1998s '4' being a jazz masterpiece and it has lots of strong material that could've been put on this 'Best Of' CD had it been released later. Fourplay are a very talented jazz group and really stand out in my opinion in the smooth jazz field. The only better jazz band in that field is Dancing Fantasy although their music is more on the New Agey side. My favorites are the danceable Bali Run, the lovely rendition of The Isley Brothers 'Between The Sheets', the eclectic Max-O-Man, and 4Play & Pleasure. The one song though that beats everything else on this CD is the stunning version of Phil Collins Why Can't It Wait Till Morning which features Phil himself on vocals and it beats out the original version and ranks as the one of the best songs that Fourplay have ever performed. WCIWTM keeps this CD a five-star. A worthy collection that is worth it just for track 4 and track 12 alone.:)

Fourplay is an extremely talented group that has in this album put together an entire CD of their very best. And it is indeed their best. Every cut could be a single. Fourplays rendition of the Stevie Wonder classic, "Higher Ground" elevates, transends, and improves on the original. This is a great CD even if you don't know anything about jazz. Everytime I have played this album, guests have always asked, "Who was that?" Fourplay. Buy this CD, and if you don't like it, I'll give you your money back. Best of Fourplay. Christopher L Ford.

Fourplay has got to be one of my favorite groups, combining contemporary jazz sound with classic jazz skills and talent. This album in particular is a great listen, especially for a new listener. After hearing it, you'll want to get the rest of their albums. It's just so smooth that it can be used to set the mood, but it's also great to groove to. All I can say is that I hope Fourplay stays around for a long time.

This is Fourplay at its best. You cannot find a bad track in this CD.
I am an audiophile and cannot wait for this CD to be remastered in the Super Audio CD format. Frankly, though, this is already a very good CD recording. I'm just wanting to see what the SACD can improve on it.
A must buy!

This album is increbible! I became a serious fan of Fourplay, after purchasing it. The smooth jazz sound, instrumental and with vocals, make for one of the best compilations I've ever heard. If you want to introduce someone to the world of contemporary jazz, this is the place to start. The teaming with Take 6 on the Stevie Wonder classic, "Higher Ground" is outstanding. A pure listening pleasure.

"All Fourplay members were made to each other". That's the conclusion you reach after listening to this Album (and all the others as well). Lee Ritenour... what an incredible technique of playing in octaves this guy has developed. Harvey Mason, sometimes you think he's asleep or something like that and then BUM he comes out of no where! Nathan East, bravo! Bob James is the one who wrote "Chant", need I say more! After all that, the album ends with Phil Collins in the remix of his song "Why Can't It Wait Till Morning". It's too much for me! This one I'm taking to my honeymoon :-)

Fourplay are not Jazz geniuses, but they are definatly on the top of the regular phase, where most Jazz musicians are. "The Best of Fourplay" is a fun album to listen to. The Bass is interesting, the improvisasios are good, calm and pleasent to the ear. It is a good addition to everybody that already have the Jazz "classics" and "Must Have's". It is a cool and modern Jazz as you might hear in the best Jazz clubs. It is pure fun.
