But that`s not necessarily good.

However, what IS best is right here...five cuts, every one a Billboard top ten: Twist, Twist Senora, Dear Lady Twist, School Is Out, Quarter to Three (Gary`s two-week Number One) and the one that started him--and his producer--off so strongly, New Orleans.
The CD also features another that should have charted, but didn`t: Not Me. Alas, a lyric like `punch you in the lip` wasn`t gonna get airplay (any more than would The Crystals` He Hit Me (It felt like a kiss).

Unfortunately, this CD (And another, called `The Very Best`) also includes a lot of stuff that didn`t cut it then...doesn`t cut it now, especially the 1963 overly-long (4 min. plus) noise-fest, Perdido. Trash. No disrespect to Bonds himself, who would probably say, `None taken`,`as he reportedly hated some of his records, too.

I haven`t seen or played The Very Best Of CD, so I can`t compare the two, but the difference might be the booklet with THIS package, which, in typical Rhino fashion, is terrific, and possibly the sound of the songs. This material was remastered--probably to the good, as Bonds manger-producer Frank Guida assisted in the project.

What got to me as a kid, and still gets me now, is the SOUND Guida engineered in his own studio for Bonds`records, a sound that captured the excitement of a ``live`` performance, not only with ``audience`` participation--applause, cheers, shouts, etc.--but with a sound that resembled a cheap outdoor PA system. Stunning, at the time, and copied, to one degree or another, by dozens of bands and artists thereafter, including Guida`s other big hit-maker, Jimmy Soul, in If You Wanna Be Happy.

There are those handful of records that millions of individuals hold in their hearts and memories as near-sacred.

The music on this CD is a fine collection of tunes by Gary U.S. Bonds, an artist whose rise to stardom was as meteoric as his disappearance from the charts a few short years later. Bonds had almost no vocal range but the raucus party atmosphere on most of his hits added to the excitement of his music, and his wild shouts aside, Bonds did put together a respectable body of work that many of his contemporaries would envy. All the big hits are included on this disc, but after "Seven Day Weekend", Bonds' last noteworthy chart entry, the rest of the line-up is mainly filler. Still, this CD is a keeper and brings back fond memories.

"Gary US Bonds is the greatest rock n roll singer living today! Starting from the late '50s, Gary brings it all out on this lp. "The Best of..." is a dream! Each and every song captures the true party atmosphere that lived! From 'School is Out' to 'School is In', Gary demonstrates that he was and still is THE MAN for rock n roll!!"
