This is the second of the books we gave our grandson for his birthday. He is in love with these tender animals. He catches their poignancy and wit. He often speaks of their kindness.

Patrick McDonnell's legendary comic strip showcasing the adventures and observations of Earl the dog and Mooch the cat entertained readers throughout its 300+ strip history. These two unlikely buddies were supported by a cast of memorable characters that included Shtinky Puddin', Sourpuss, and Guard Dog. Deftly embedded in this popular newspaper cartoon series were lessons on love, friendship, animal advocacy, and pet ownership. Now Andrews & McMeel have meticulously published "The Best Of Mutts" featuring McDonnel's own hand-picked favorites from the dailies and the Sunday strips over the past ten years. the cartoons are arranged into ten chapters, each of which is enhanced with an introduction by McDonnell. A welcome addition to any personal or community library collection, "The Best Of Mutts" will well serve to introduce a whole new generation to a superbly crafted series that is as popular today as when it first appeared so many years ago.

If you have pets, you should get this book.
If you love animals, you should get this book.
If you don't have an animal friend in your life, you especially need to get this book!

"The Best of Mutts" is a collection of Patrick McDonnell's favorite in his comic series that opens the world to you from the innocent viewpoint of a dog and cat. It's funny, heartwarming, and oftentimes thought-provoking. Kids and adults alike will appreciate its gentle humor. Never fails to make me smile!

This book was actually a gift for my son who absolutely loves it. The book itself is also really nice, seems like I'll keep it for a collector's item.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my little sister this year, eager to share all my past laughs and heart warming experiences with Patrick's timeless characters with her.

I first fell in love with Mutts through the Sunday newspaper; I remember laying on the floor as a teenager with the comics sections sprawled out before me, searching for the best strips. Mutts came out on top, everytime.

I've always been fascinated with comic strips. How can a few lines and a few words, so perfectly executed, conjure such feelings and emotions? After enjoying THE BEST OF MUTTS, I realize the sheer talent Patrick holds within his pen. Not only does he bring a mere cat and dog to the fullest of life, he gives us unique stories, challenges, heartbreaks, and friendships. The entire cast of Mutts are enjoyable, and I have to remind myself that they are just characters, not real humans and animals (although I am sure Patrick bases his Mutts cast on real people and animals, such as his cute little dog). We have chained guard dogs, mischevious squirrels, a cat obsessed with his sock, a devoted dog owner, and a disgruntled chef, just to name a few. They all bring flavor to the comic. I particularly am touched by the Shelter Stories. As a dog lover, I constantly advocate adopting shelter dogs and cats.

In my opinion, the best comics not only entertain, they educate, elighten and challenge us in our own lives. Mutts is the perfect blend of all four. You cannot help but chuckle, laugh, smile, or even get a little teary eyed.

They melt my heart, every single time.

This book is an entire anthology of the very best of Mutts. Additional notes by the author provide a deeper insight in his special work. The illustrations are partly b/w and partly coloured.
The price is awesome, and the quality of the hardcover is amazing. I received it in Germany after a shipping time of 4 days, even though Amazon said it would take at least 4 weeks. 5 stars!!

The message of compassion for animals could not be presented more clearly. It is also entertaining, and the joy of the artwork lifts your spirits. A great read on a rainy day - you can relax your mind and let it all sink in.

I just discovered the cartoon strip, "Mutts" last year as my local papers don't carry this strip. My best friend in California sends the strips to me every week.
I craved for more so I ordered this book, "The Best of Mutts." It is just wonderful! It presents the first 10 years of the strip (1997-2007)with the cartoonist author, Patrick McDonnell, introducing each year with an explanation of how the strip is evolving and introduces the new characters he has added over the years. This is the funniest cartoon strip I have ever read. The main characters, "Mooch" (the all knowing cat), and "Earl" (the more humble dog) are best friends and they share their views of the world in nature from their unique vantage point. It is filled with simple pleasures and joy of their every day experiences encountering other species on the planet and a running commentary of how beautiful and puzzling life itself can be. This is a must have book. You won't regret for one moment adding this book to your home library. Enjoy!
