Editorial Reviews

Product Description

This second volume of Marvin's hits takes you into the '70s, when his songs took a deeply personal and political turn. Some of the most soulful hits ever recorded are here: What's Going On; Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology); Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler); Trouble Man; Let's Get It On; You're a Special Part of Me; Got to Give It Up (Pt. 1) , and more.

Amazon.com

Marvin Gaye's 1970s recordings reflected his growing awareness of social issues--"What's Going On," "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)"--coupled with a freewheeling sexuality ("Let's Get It On," "Come Get to This," "I Want You"). On both counts, Gaye was out in front of the times, and helped shape the discussion during that turbulent time. This set does a good job of briefly limning the highlights of Gaye's '70s work; coupled with the 20th Century Masters companion volume of his '60s hits, it gives a fair if less than definitive overview of one of pop's most prolific and important hitmakers. --Daniel Durchholz

The songs here all great examples of Marvin Gaye's later material. Unfortunately there are other single and double disc compilations that include more later material and some of his fantastic early recordings as well. For the money, buy a copy of the 2001 "Very Best of" double CD which contains the best of his Motown recordings as well as music released on Columbia in the later years. The songs here are great but will leave you wanting more (there's no "Sexual Healing"). Save a few bucks more and buy the "Very Best Of" new or used. You can build your collection from there.

Extremely disappointed in this CD. One of my main reason for purchasing this CD was the mere fact that Marvin Gaye's classic Distant Lover Live performance was on this CD. Unfortunately, they must think. Marvin Gaye's fans would not noticed the obvious shorten version of the song. They cut out so many parts of the song, I felt ripped off!

...it has MPG's masterworks, "What's Goin' On", "Trouble Man", "Let's Get It On", "I Want You" and a treat in the Marvin & Diana cut "You're A Special Part of Me", but they were done in a compilation somewheres already and done better. Good for the 1st time Marv fan, but other than that stick to the Original albums produced by Motown and Columbia records.

These without a doubt are some classic recordings by Marvin, but the only reason i can possibly see me or anyone else copping this greatest hits collection would be strictly for the title song "My last Chance", due to the fact that it does not exist on any other of his greatest hits or anthology collections, which i think is somewhat sad. That song along with the live version of the "Star Spangled Banner" from the 1983 Nba all star game should be on at least two greatest hits collections.

Ecopac is for the birds, which is also what I want to give 'em. Actually, I'd rate the music and song sellection at 4 of 5, the other volume 1, the '60 at 5 of 5. But it is bad enough the teen's these days are becoming illiterate, but the record company must thinbk that "baby boomers" are also illiterate too since there is no booklet or liner notes. I went to the web site, [...], and guess what? This album is not on the site currently (on October 11, 2011). Hopefully I can find an extensive review somewhere that gives the sources and recording dates for the songs on this album.

Perhaps I sould also consider a larger collection for READERS that comes with NOTES. Or maybe it is time to buy a whole book about Marvin Gaye with recording history and discography! Well, now I know what ECOPAC means and to avoid ECOPAC CDS.

No one like Marvin Gaye, His music really makes you feel. Too bad his father killed him. Who knows what more he could have done artistically. Sad, sad, sad.
