Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The syndicated radio program Millennium of Music and its host Robert Aubry Davis have done a great deal to introduce American audiences to the enormously varied repertory referred to as early music. Now Davis and his colleagues are releasing a series of compilation discs showcasing the tremendous range and beauty of "the 1,000 years before the birth of Bach." The well-chosen selections on volume 2 of the series (the obligatory Christmas collection) run from 12th-century chant to two excerpts from Handel's Messiah and focus on the tender, reverent side of the holiday rather than exuberant celebration. A particularly interesting essay about the history of Christmas as a celebration is included. Those already familiar with classical or "early" music will probably prefer entire works over excerpts, but newcomers to this repertory should find this sampler a good starting point--have a listen, decide what you like, and go on exploring from there. --Matthew Westphal

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique Christmas music! November 30, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you treasure early and classical music and are looking for something special to play at Christmas, look no further! I heard a number of these pieces on public radio's Millenium of Music. The collection is well-chosen and the music is gorgeous.

1.0 out of 5 stars CD was blank!!!! January 30, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This was a gift, consequently I was not only angry but embarrassed as well to find out the CD was blank. This was such a highly regarded radio program...I expected their product to be the same. $17 wasted.
