Starting out in Baltimore as The Mellotones, lead Ernie Lee Warren, 1st tenor Jack Aydelotte (and guitarist), 2nd tenor Meridith Brothers, baritone Donald Johnson, and bass Leon "Tree Top" Hardy, had their named changed by Atlantic Records in 1951 after being signed to a recording deal in order to avoid confusion with another gathering called The Mellotones who were then recording for Columbia.

After cutting four sides, (Give Me) A Little Something, Give Me Another Chance, Shouldn't I Know?, and Please Don't Leave Me, the last two were paired on Atlantic 938 and released in May, although the A-side, Shouldn't I Know?, didn't crack the R&B charts until early October, when it peaked at a quite respectable # 7. Why that beautiful ballad, or any of their other R&B charters for that matter, never crossed over to the more lucrative Pop charts is beyond comprehension. The first two cuts never were released.

After I'll Always Love You/Pretty Baby Blues failed to chart late in 1951 on Atlantic 952, their cover of the Kay Starr Pop smash, The Wheel Of Fortune, made it to # 6 R&B in March 1952 b/w Kiss Me Baby on Atlantic 958, coming in third on those charts behind the # 2 Eddie Wilcox& His Orchestra/Sunny Gale release on Derby, and the # 3 Dinah Washington version for Mercury. But after that, the hits were as scarce as their releases as none among their next three sporadic releases could get them back on the national lists: The Bump/She Rocks on Atlantic 972 in August 1952 (on which the lead was taken over by Leander Tarver while Warren was in the service), You Are My Only Love/Lovey Darling on Atlantic 995 in May 1953, and Under A Blanket Of Blue/ Please Baby on Atlantic 1025 in April 1954.
