The Best of Manhattan Transfer culls a dozen great songs from their early career. I've seen reviews that say "such and such should have been added and so and so should have been left off". While I may agree with their assessment, producers and artists have to start and stop somewhere. Sometimes it's something as simple as having been recorded on a different label and not being allowed authorization to move over. Regardless, The Best of... has some of their truly great songs.

The quality of the music is certainly appreciated on CD. I do love vinyl, but there are more times than not that CD allows hearing sounds or notes that the vinyl just cannot seem to produce without the aid of headphones.

Janis Siegel, Laurel Massé, Tim Hauser and Alan Paul lend their collective voices to make this group work. In 1979, Laurel left the group after being involved in a serious auto accident. She was replaced by Cheryl Bentyne who blended intot he group flawlessly.

You'll tap your toes, drum the desk, snap your fingers and hum or sing along with this album. All the songs are very accessible and many received adequate air time that they are truly familiar.

I love the music of this talented Jazz vocal harmony group from NY City (Tim Hauser, Alan Paul, Janis Siegel and Laurel Masse, with the latter replaced in 1979 by Cheryl Bentyne) who had already logged these 5 nationally charting singles when the original LP (Atlantic SD 19319) represented by this CD first appeared in 1981: Operator - a # 22 Billboard Pop Hot 100/# 34 Adult Contemporary (AC) in Nov-Dec 1975 b/w Tuxedo Junction on Atlantic 3292; Chanson D'Amour, their Jan-Feb 1977 # 16 AC cover of the 1958 Art & Dotty Todd # 6 Hot 100 b/w Popsicle Toes on Atlantic 3374; Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone - # 30 Hot 100 April-May 1980 b/w Body And Soul on Atlantic 3649; Trickle Trickle, their Dec 1980 # 73 Hot 100 cover of the non-charting 1959 Doo-Wop selection by The Videos b/w Foreign Affair on Atlantic 3772; and The Boy From New York City, their June-July 1981 # 4 AC/# 7 Hot 100 cover of the 1965 Ad Libs # 8 Hot 100 hit b/w (The Word Of) Confirmation on Atlantic 3816.

So, at the time of the release of the LP titled "The Best Of" it might have been reasonable for fans to expect to see, in a 13-track album, all 10 sides plus 3 culled from their 6 Atlantic albums to that point. After all, these were the sides that brought them some measure of fame by making it onto the various national singles charts through air- and juke-box play and record sales and that was, when you get rigt down to it, the goal of both artist and label when releasing singles in the days of the 78- and then 45-rpm discs.

But no, they opted to leave out Foreign Affair and (The Word Of) Confirmation - the latter only the flip of their best hit ever - as well as both sides of Chanson D'Amour and Popsicle Toes.

It's one of my favorites. I had it years ago and then sadly it burned up in a car crash, from which I walked away unscathed but without my CDs. 'Birdland' is a special favorite.
