In The Best of Us, Cleve Stevens has written a brilliant and profound book. By the way of full disclosure, I know Cleve. We connected a number of times over the past couple of years and I can see "fingerprints" of this in the book. This being said... it is evident that it is written from the wisdom of personal experience rather than academic research or observation. The book feels like we are in a direct conversation with Cleve and we get to know him as a person. The book is highly readable and fully engages at the human level.

While the content is focused on mastering what he calls Transformative Leadership (TL), this book is not just for people in leadership roles. It is a call for all of us to lead, not manage, our lives. As Cleve points out, most people in positions of authority are not true leaders. To be a transformative leader we must first transform ourselves and he skillfully shows us how to do this.

What I most appreciate about The Best of Us is that it did not reduce leadership to a list of characteristics or action steps but rather confronts each of us with the truth of what it means to be a leader, which means being the best we possibly can be. If you think you already are achieving your full potential, I strongly recommend that you read this book and you will know that you are not.

I also appreciate the ongoing and clear distinctions that Cleve makes throughout the book: leading vs managing; transactional vs transformational leading; option vs possibility; responsibility vs accountability; and team vs functional group to name a few.

Cleve clearly exemplifies the principles he is talking about through the way he shares the concepts and style in which he writes. It is straightforward that at times is "in our face" without any BS.

This book will shake up the business world and our core ideas about leadership, and in all the right ways. There's been a lot of talk and articles about how organizations need to connect with their people authentically, grow internal talent, and all that. Here is a book that gets real and specific about what transformative leadership really is, and how to live it and summon it from an organization's leaders. Many of Stevens' concepts have been touched on by others, but he sets forth disciplines of leadership and growth that are practical, accessible and compelling. I have started to employ key elements of this approach and the results with my team are very positive. If you think leadership must be about much more than profit and personal gain, and have any sense that the future belongs to leaders and organizations that re-imagine and "re-make" how they empower and serve their people, this book is a must read for you.

The "Best In Us" is a powerful addition for students and individuals looking to understand and master true Transformative Leadership. It is at once very readable with wonderful and engaging examples of individuals applying each of the concepts presented. Dr Stevens has blended his unique and extensive knowledge of history, philosophy, psychology and science, as all of these relate to understanding and implementing his very simply explained, but powerful concepts of leadership and personal development. As a student of leadership I found the book both comprehensive and compelling, as Dr Stevens takes you step by step through both the concepts and the 'how-to steps of taking yourself on', as both an individual and a leader. Although simple and straight forward, it is clear that Dr Steven's approach is very challenging and requires a consistent commitment over time by the individual or leadership team, if it is to be fully implemented. Business leadership with all of its many problems today, desperately needs to adopt the leadership approach and values contained in this book.
