Book Description

December 28, 2011
Since the times of Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, Americans have headed off to Europe on odysseys of self-improvement. But until recently, Americans have not chosen 'the best way'—El Camino de Santiago. Bill Walker ("Skywalker") decided to undertake this 500 mile trek, that stretches from the Pyrenees in southern France to Santiago in Northwest Spain. Better yet, he did it in the ‘Holy Year’ of 2010. Fully 200,000 pilgrims were struggling on foot to make it to the Great Gothic Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. The Camino is supposed to be a religious-spiritual pilgrimage. But Walker had also been told that it was “The European Divorcee Trail.” At Walker's side was his 18 year-old nephew, Gavin, who thrives with his special brand of Fonzie-like charm. The towel-snapping banter between the two of them is reminiscent of the frat-boy dialogue between Bill Bryson and Katz. Better yet, the two of them learn just how delightful the French really can be (except, of course, when they’re being impossible), why the Germans are almost all model pilgrims, and the tragi-glorious roots of the Spanish national character.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Best Way--El Camino de Santiago is a memoir from Bill Walker as he shares his journey along this footpath through the Pyrenees betwen France and Spain, and how throughout history it has been used as a road of thought and reevaluation of life. 'The Best Way' is a strong pick for those considering the journey themselves."

EXCERPTS

"I'm American to the core. So please forgive me if I say some foolish things when I'm overseas. It's my birthright."

"In spite of their Gallic annoyances, it's hard to escape the conclusion that the French are a little bit special."

"I didn't have a martyr's complex. Bleeding myself, or otherwise inducing suffering, was not for this particular pilgrim. Vomiting would have to do as my Camino sacrifice."

"This woman's humiliating putdown of my adolescent humor was to be the source of my greatest epiphany of the pilgrimage. El Camino de Santiago is not the European Divorcee Trail, after all."

"The great irony--the profoundly happy fact--is that a difficult journey on foot narrows our options greatly, yet somehow enlarges us at the same time. Perhaps it even holds out the possibility of bringing us just a little bit closer to God."

More About the Author

Bill Walker attended the University of Georgia where he received a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Accounting. He spent the two most boring years of his life as a tax accountant at Arthur Andersen in Atlanta.

Walker then became a commodities broker for the next fourteen years, first at the Chicago Board of Trade, then at the London International Financial Futures Exchange. That was anything but boring. But in 2001, the entire business was computerized. It was again time to sharply change course.

Walker became a VISTA volunteer and was the welfare-reform coordinator for the South Texas region. He then moved to Latin America where he taught English as a Second Language in five different countries.

In 2005, he thru-hiked the 2,175 mile Appalachian Trail. Upon completion, he wrote Skywalker--Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail. This book has sold steadily on Amazon.com. In 2009, Walker hiked the 2,663 mile Pacific Crest Trail. He recently published a narrative of that journey called, Skywalker--Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail, which is the number one selling book on the Pacific Crest Trail.

Walker, who is 6'11", is currently working on a book on the subject of height. He lives in Asheville, North Carolina.

3.0 out of 5 stars a pretty good way, but not the BEST way May 9, 2012
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed this book, but I wouldn't say it was great. Perhaps I'm just not a fan of the rambling monologue, preferring books that are crafted to communicate a specific thought. Many times the "episodes" in a single chapter were disjointed, not just the flow (or lack there of) from one chapter to the next. And in the end, there did seem to be an attempt to make a point, something like "Christianity has been a force of good", but it did not follow from the 90% of the book that came before it.
Also, it became tiresome to read the many descriptions of "athletic, fit, fun" women half his age that he was hanging out with, who could only be distinguished from each other by the color of their hair. For someone who repeatedly joked that he was going on the "european divorcee tour" he hardly hung out with anyone old enough to have completed their first divorce.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another CAN'T PUT IT DOWN read! February 7, 2012
Format:Paperback
Skywalker has once again brought his readers along on another fun long distance hike...this time across Spain. He shares a pretty in-depth history of Europe's religions and nicely dovetails that in with his sojourn to the sea. The varied mix of international characters that he meets along the way brings home how similar our lives are no matter where we are from. Skywalker seems to really enjoy a "total immersion" with the languages and cultures he encounters! Once you pick up this book, you won't want to put it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Way: El Camino de Santiago February 11, 2012
By Patty G
Format:Paperback
Another entertaining and informative book by Bill Walker, a.k.a. Skywalker. Again, the author has a way of making the reader feel as though they are on the hike with him in his down-to-earth demeanor and his interactions with the characters he meets on the trail. This time he takes along his nephew, Gavin, who provides some comic relief along the way. This book includes quite a bit more historical references than his first two but in an interesting way that doesn't feel too heavy. I would definitely recommend this book for pleasurable story-telling but also for anyone who has ever been curious about hiking El Camino and some of the history that goes along with it.
