Discover the breakthrough fertility and pregnancy diet and lifestyle plan based on brand-new genetic science

Whether you're planning for pregnancy or are already expecting, this essential prenatal guide draws on the latest genetic research to give you a complete program of specific nutrition and environmental lifestyle changes to help you have a better baby. Written for parents everywhere, it contains a program created by two parents—a fertility-oriented physician and a nutrition expert—to reactivate their own fertility after age forty. The book is based on the emerging science of epigenetics, showing how you can change the way your environment interacts with your genes and affect which genes are expressed or "turned on." The Better Baby Book shares important steps you can take to improve preconception nutrition and reduce toxins in your home and your body to consciously get pregnant and help your baby be healthier, smarter, and stronger. This groundbreaking guide:

  • Builds on the latest epigenetics research to help you produce a healthier, smarter, and happier baby with genes for lower risk of allergies, asthma, and developmental issues
  • Shares a specific prescriptive program based on four principles: eating the right foods; taking the right supplements; detoxifying before, during, and after pregnancy; and using new techniques to consciously control maternal stress
  • Demonstrates how a woman's health and her environment during pregnancy may have a much bigger lifelong impact on her child than was previously thought
  • Includes the authors' compelling story of developing the Better Baby Plan as they had their own better babies

More About the Author

Dave Asprey is a Silicon Valley investor and entrepreneur, a professional biohacker, and the creator of Bulletproof Coffee made with butter. He is host of Bulletproof Radio, a nationally syndicated radio show and #1 ranked podcast with 10 million downloads. Dave serves as Chairman of the Silicon Valley Health Institute.

Dave spent 15 years and $300,000 to hack his own biology. He used techniques to upgrade his brain by more than 20 IQ points, lowered his biological age, and lost 100 lbs without using calories or exercise.

His work has been featured on The Tonight Show, Nightline, Forbes, CNN, ABC News and FOX News. His writing has been published by the New York Times and Fortune, and he's been featured in The Financial Times, Rolling Stone, Men's Health, Vogue, Fast Company, Marie Claire, Women's Health, and dozens more.

Dave's work is born out of a fifteen-year single-minded crusade to upgrade the human being using every available technology. It distills the knowledge of more than 120 world-class MDs, biochemists, Olympic nutritionists, meditation experts, and hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on personal self-experiments.

From 40 Years of Zen private brain EEG facilities hidden in a Canadian forest to remote monasteries in Tibet, from Silicon Valley to the Andes, high tech entrepreneur Dave Asprey used hacking techniques and tried everything himself, obsessively focused on discovering:

What are the simplest things you can do to be better at everything?

Knowing this leads to being bulletproof, the state of high performance where you take control of and improve your biochemistry, your body, and your mind so they work in unison, helping you execute at levels far beyond what you'd expect, without burning out, getting sick, or just acting like a stressed-out jerk. It used to take a lifetime to radically rewire the human body and mind this way. Technology has changed the rules.

There is SOO much information out there about what to eat, what affects fertility, fetal development, etc. Most of this information is self-contradictory garbage.

This book is heavily science-based, showing you the research to support the recommended diet, supplements, and environmental changes. Overall, I've made several of the suggested changes to myself (a husband to a pregnant wife) and noted a substantial improvement in how I look and feel - so I am confident that the recommendations are solid.

If you enjoy learning about health and are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant, this book is FANTASTIC.

However, the focus of this book is information, allowing you to make better decisions, but is NOT focused on actual behavioral change. I think the book would be substantially improved with more of a focus on how to actually implement these changes into your life - including a 'biggest bang for your buck' and 'start here' list.

Everything in the book seems to be presented as equally dangerous, making the changes seem overwhelming. The book really leaves it up to you to decide what to do and how to incorporate the changes. I disagree with that approach, thus 4 stars instead of 5.

In my opinion, the 2 easiest changes to make with the biggest results are: cut as much wheat/dairy from your diet as possible, and introduce a lot of grass-fed butter to your diet.

I also wish that the book had included more information for after the baby was born, as there is only a small section dedicated to this, but perhaps that will be the next book!

I bought this book out of general health interest and less for an immediate baby interest. It is 'quite extreme' for the casual person interested in health improvement. If you are chronically ill or dealing with health problems you are more likely to accept the extremes (and they'll potentially have a bigger impact on your quality of life).

There is a lot of information in this book and if you follow Dave Asprey's blog there are some good additional details here and there that you won't have already heard or seen in his posts. In particular in the areas of toxins and detoxification you'll find more details (or to a degree different information) than that found on his blog or podcast. I finished this book in a couple of days as a result, and took down some good notes on areas to investigate further and potential actions to take to improve my health. If you follow Dave's blog I imagine you'd find it similarly useful.

Some of the new parts to me were:
1. Some additional information on mycotoxins
2. Information on supporting the body's detoxification process
3. Some chemicals and materials in common household products that can be toxic
4. Details on cooking methods to reduce damage to proteins and oxidisation
5. Issues with water

The problem with this book is that it lacks credibility. Dave Asprey has commented several times that he put a lot of effort into crosschecking references for this book (in fact he mentioned that he hired someone to do this). So I was disappointed when there were no citations in the book. There are many bold claims throughout the book and in many cases it references science and research without the actual references or citations. Very disappointing.

This book is so comprehensive, well-written, backed by research, yet easy for the layperson to understand. If you want to conceive, are already pregnant, or are nursing, it's a must read! AND if you are interested in becoming healthier In general and balancing your hormones, follow the recommendations in The Better Baby Book. I am not trying to conceive (yet) but I couldn't wait for the Bulletproof Executive book to come out, so I got The Better Baby Book as a way to get more detailed information in the meantime. After reading it, I realized I have some things to consider before even trying to get pregnant. The nutrition and exercise advice is phenomenal, and the supplement section is one of the best I've seen. Do your family a favor and get this book. (PS No, I don't work for the authors! I'm just really passionate about the importance of getting this information into as many hands and minds as possible.)

...I think almost all mom's and mom's-to-be know that. But looking at the massive amount of info that is available, it's overwhelming knowing that you "should" do more, but not know how to go about it.

This book is an easy read on what you can do to feel great as a mom and set your baby up for a healthy life long before he/she is born. I haven't seen any other education/guidance that's been as easy to read or understand.

If you're thinking of having a baby or are currently pregnant, this is worth a read (either the whole thing or pick and choose the parts that you think apply to you and your pregnancy.) You'll learn things you won't see/hear/read from an average "nutrition" book. Be prepared to discover that many of the traditional assumptions about health of both mom, baby AND dad are at odds with some of the research presented in this book. Then see how you can make a few vital changes that can make a huge difference in how you feel and how your baby develops.

You'll read about how to have a potentially easier pregnancy where YOU feel good, and you can make major decisions that will impact the health of your baby for his/her whole life. The approach to food choices in this book can actually help your body get ready to become pregnant too.

If you are the type of person who doesn't believe everything you read, don't worry, this book is backed up by mountains of scientific and real world research.

Even if you only change a few small things in your food choices or your environment based on what you read, this book explains how it can have a huge impact on your pregnancy and health.
