Book Description

"The Big Apple Posse: Escape From New Orleans" is the sequel to "The Big Apple Posse" and the second book of "The Big Apple Posse Trilogy." Last October, Amanda and her brother Peter of Greenwich, Connecticut were trapped in New York City after some "terrorists" blew up several buildings in the city, including the theater where they were waiting to be picked up after a show. They escaped with the help of some new friends who formed The Big Apple Posse to figure out how to leave a city where there are no longer any busses, subways, taxis, working phones or internet service. With the help of one of their new friends and posse members, Thibodeaux Botrain (a teenage boy who lives in Harlem with his Aunt Tina), they found proof that the so-called terrorists were actually a gang of South African diamond thieves.

It is now the end of February and Amanda and Peter are living in New Jersey with a former FBI agent, hiding until they can testify in the "terrorist trial of the century" in June. One afternoon, Amanda sees one of the terrorists hiding in the trees, watching her play soccer. She grabs Peter and travels into the City to seek help from Mr. Benedicte Trudeau, a Harlem lawyer who represents Thibodeaux's Auntie Tina.

Mr. Trudeau arranges for Amanda, Peter and Thibodeaux to travel to New Orleans to hide with members of Thibodeaux's family. They arrive in New Orleans and soon find that Amanda, Peter and Thibodeaux are supposed to live in an apartment on New Orleans' funky Magazine Street, watched over only by Thibodeaux's beautiful seventeen-year-old cousin, Solange (an aspiring ballet dancer and singer), and one of Mr. Trudeau's sons, Michael, a twenty-three-old intern at his brother's hip-hop label. The posse has arrived in New Orleans just in time for Mardi Gras and they are quickly immersed in a world of music, dance, parades, voodoo and romance. New Orleans is a cultural stew where no one "stands out," but are they safe? Can anyone successfully hide in a world of Facebook, Google, Youtube and facial recognition software? And can the posse escape a gang of terrorists who will do anything to prevent them from testifying?

"The Big Apple Posse: Escape From New Orleans" is the second installment of "The Big Apple Trilogy." The first book, "The Big Apple Posse: Escape From New York," was published in December of 2011. The third and final book of the trilogy, "The Big Apple Posse: Escape from Los Angeles," was published in August of 2012. "Solange's Song," the young adult sequel to the "Big Apple Posse" books, was published in January of 2014. All the books are available on

This delightful sequel to The Big Apple Posse: Escape from New York lands our two siblings in New Orleans of all places. The natives of Connecticut, savvy, clever 13-year-old Amanda and her 11-year-old brother Peter are waiting to testify against the terrorists (really a gang of diamond thieves)—along with their friend Thibodeaux—the trio are whooshed away by the FBI to the City of Jazz where they are encounter quite the culture shock in large part thanks to Thibodeaux’s gorgeous 17-year old cousin, Solange who is a ballet dancer and jazz singer with quite the following.

Author Wendy Williams has a great knack for teenspeak and is impressively detail-oriented in her writing. I really enjoyed how these teens reacted to the very-foreign-to-suburbanites Louisiana ways. And Williams impressed with moments like Amanda’s reaction to Solange questioning her as to whether she knows about sex and birth control: “I'm not interested in sex. I want to go to Harvard,” Amanda replies. In addition, she writes Solange so well, I wish I could be there in the club listening to her sing.

And just when you get comfortable in the slice of New Orleans life and the bonds being built, Williams pulls the rug from under you by creating more edge-of-your-seat suspense for this group.

The Big Apple Posse: Escape from New Orleans is a treat. It moves at a swift pace and keeps the reader enthralled throughout. I look forward to reading the next two installments.

Oh and Solange is a great new character. I’d follow Amanda and Solange anywhere. How about a European adventure next?

This second installment of the Big Apple Posse series finds tweens Amanda, Peter and Thibodaux on the run from the bad guys who terrorized New York City in Book One. After the posse helped defeat the Manhattan Marauders, they entered witness protection prepared to testify against them. But when a "mole hole" in the FBI leaves them with cover blown, concerned geriatric colleagues arrange for the tweens' flight to the Big Easy as well as new identities there. Meeting up with Solange, the world's nicest seventeen-year-old and budding torch singer, the tweens are swept up into an adventure steeped in local culture, while never missing a nutritious meal or a ballet lesson, breaking into the hip-hop music business and defeating the bad guys in the end once again. A fun, eccentric read for all ages, with excellent illustrations by Sophie Escabasse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Growing Up in a Hurry! January 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Following these kids across two novels has been quite a treat! This is not the life these kids chose, for sure, since they would much prefer home, family and familiarity to life on the run being chased by inept but still frightening bad guys. Ms. Williams has a gift for letting characters develop, interact, and support one another. By the end of this second installment these young people understand they are pretty good at what they do, even if they did not choose their circumstances. As in the first book, characters are developed until you think you know each one and settings are described in such detail you think you are there in the room. And it's all fun and moves fast! Spend an evening with this story and you'll feel you have really gone somewhere, done something, and had some fun! --Philip Riley
