The Big Book of HR provides a complete overview of human resources. It covers topics including recruiting, compensation, benefits, employee performance development, technology, and potential impact.

That's the dry account.

The rich account is this: The Big Book of HR provides some terrific insight into the day-to-day responsibilities in an HR office. The book examines concepts, includes definitions, has links to resources, and ends each chapter with discussion questions. It covers a lot of ground.

The drawback for such a great book is that it's in print. Links will quickly become outdated. Social media strategies will change. Laws will change.

But that's life.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone just starting out in HR, is thinking about HR, or would like some ideas for alternative thoughts and ideas.

In "The Big Book of HR," Mitchell and Gamlem, both seasoned practitioners, have compiled not just HR laws, regulations, and standards, but they have armed the HR practitioner with a hands-on human resources management guide. This is not a textbook to study and then put on the shelf to collect dust. Easy to comprehend, it is packed full of practical experience from HR professionals and successful business leaders. "The Big Book of HR" does reference relevant legal statues that frame the field but it is much more.

Whether you are a HR specialist or solo generalist, a supervisor with HR oversight, even a small business owner wearing multiple hats, you will find "The Big Book of HR" easy to read and applicable with tips and techniques to help any business leader succeed. Cornelia Gamlem and Barbara Mitchell have provided an excellent reference for HR professionals, managers and small business owners with their recently published "Big Book of HR." While the entire book offers a wealth of information on the inner-workings of HR, each chapter can also stand alone for a quick reference. Readers are guided through the critical areas of human resource management, in a concise and practical way, using stories to help illustrate the points being made.

A great learning tool for anyone with an interest in sound HR practices.

The Big Book of HR is a great HR reference book that covers virtually all areas of the human resources field - a one source of relevant information. The chapters include everything from the legal aspects of the employment relationship to the core function of HR which is attracting and developing talent for the organization. It is a practical guide which is easy to follow and provides solid recommendations on how to lead an HR organization for the benefit of the enterprise it supports. If I could only have one HR book on my shelf, this would be the one.

As Director of a Corporate University, I teach the concept of lagniappe - "giving a little bit more.' I expected a "quick resource" that I would pick up on an as needed basis. In addition to this, I found myself drawn into topics with the clear logic, engaging examples, models, checklists and most of all the discussion questions at the end of the chapter. These questions helped me ensure that I captured the important issues around the topic. This book is a resource and a little bit more.

HR Professionals: Buy it, read it, rely on it and you will never regret it! Although there are lots of books on HR, The Big Book of HR is best guide for an HR practitioner out there. Regardless if you are new to the profession or tenured, The Big Book will become a reference companion to your daily work. Throughout the book it is extremely clear that Mitchell and Gamlem are seasoned professionals in the industry. Their ability to break down the concepts and apply the to situations an HR professional will come across daily ensure that this book will be well worn and dog eared. I was very impressed by the way they conveyed "insights" or "things to be aware of" that most practitioners only learn through trial and error. I wish I had this book when I was starting out! The book also allows you to lean on leaders in the HR profession as if they were sitting in the desk beside you.
