My daughter who is in in kindergarten has recently learned to read. She has a pretty good mastery of basic sight words and has been reading very basic books for about 10 months. A lot of the 'beginner' books out there are too easy or too boring ("The cat sat. Mat sat. The cat sat on mat....."). This book is a perfect balance of entertainment with silly story lines and rhyming words to easily keep her attention. If your child has completed the VERY early reading books (such as the Bob books), and has a pretty good handle on sight words and basic phonics, he or she will do well reading this with minimal assistance.

I am a mother of a toddler and I think this book of stories does not have the best wording. We have all of them. I could not find this in the store so I ordered it online. Now I know why. One story about a bad dog says "maybe we should let you there to drown.". Not something I want to read or explain etc. another story is about a very bad bunny but it doesn't really come around to explain why they should not be bad. Stick with the green, blue or purple books.

My kids love Dr. Seuss and these are beginner books so they are easier for my 1st grader to read on her own. Great value over purchasing each book individually. We bought the Big Blue, Big Green and Big Red at the same time and enjoy all of them.

I really like buying these book collections, as it's a great savings over buying the individual books. The red book is by far everybody's favorite. The included books are classics that are not likely to be in your collection already. A big bonus was the inclusion of Robert the Rose Horse, a book I read as a little girl back in the day. I'm very excited to get to share it with my kids.

My two year old and four year old love these stories, and the format of the book is ideal. They can browse the stories (illustrated on the cover) and pick a couple to read before bed.

The stories themselves are simple written, easy to follow, colorfully illustrated, and seem to entertain my kids. What's surprising is how different some of the stories values are, compared to what you find in children's books today. For instance, the first story involves a creature who decides he wants to change into a new form. He turns into an elephant and the children in the story say he's too fat and they don't like him. He changes into a giraffe and they similarly criticize him for being too tall. They tell him to go back to being the way they want him to be and he complies. The moral of the story is *supposed* to be that "It's OK to be who you are." In today's culture it comes across more like "It's NOT ok to be who you want to be."

The Very Bad Bunny has similarly dated moral framework. A young bunny misbehaves and is told by his family that he is a very bad bunny. Then another, younger bunny visits and misbehaves even more than the first bunny. Everyone concedes that the new bunny is a truly bad bunny, implying that the main character isn't all that bad, since there's someone worse. Modern children's stories tend to explore the reasons for misbehavior, humanizing the characters and suggesting alternative ways of dealing with conflict or emotions. The Very Bad Bunny simply encourages readers to keep everything in perspective and realize that there's always someone worse out there.

Despite the dated themes, the book seems to satisfy the kids, and can serve as a moral counterpoint to the typical ultra-positive attitude of modern children's literature.

I gave this to a kindergarten for Christmas. And he loved it. He felt like a big kid because he could read one story and then book mark the page.
